No. It is because it is the most accessible. You only need 2 people to play a competitive game, and you only need 10 to run full court. Basketball courts are everywhere because they are much cheaper to build and maintain than baseball or football fields. Hell, you can have a competitive game of basketball in most driveways with just a hoop.
