Sun belt has never been raided by other conferences like CUSA has

Maybe in football

In the mid 1990’s CUSA was a great basketball conference and had teams such as Marquette, Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston, Dayton, St Louis, UAB, Memphis, Louisville, Depaul, etc.

CUSA hasn't been a major conference since 2005, when they lost Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette, St. Louis, USF, & TCU.

It took 10 years (2011 - 2021) for the Sun Belt to get back above C-USA in terms of conference strength.

Judy MacLeod, C-USA president since 2015, is the reason for their decline. The C-USA case study on how to kill a conference will be easy to track. They poached Sun Belt members in 2012 so they were clearly above them at the time. In 2014 is when it starts going down hill when Houston, UCF, and SMU left. In 2021 you had Marshall, USM, and ODU leave for the Sun Belt to make them stronger. They also went from 14 members to 5 in a span of 11 days. Inept leadership to allow all these schools to leave in a 8 year window and there is even more schools I did not mention I can't recall.

Compare that to the Sun Belt. After losing members to C-USA in 2012 they added Georgia State, Texas State, and South Alabama. In 2014 they took newly brought up FCS schools like App State, Georgia Souther, Idaho, and New Mexico State. In 2016 they added Coastal and in 2017 they dropped NM State and Idaho which was a great move.

In 2021 during the peak of this renewed conference alignment Sun Belt president Keith Gill had an unreal move and added James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss. LA Tech joining this upcoming year makes it 14.

Full circle moment of the rant is that good leadership and bad leadership can clearly ruin your conference.
