Just wanted to congratulate the cajun's on their huge series victory. I like to mess with cajun fans but it's impressive how much they improved over the season. There was a point when they could have packed it in but I don't see them not winning the Sun Belt tournament especially since it's at home.

I think several of us harped on that even during the struggles. The pitching staff has always been good enough to make a run through the tournament. Just needed the bats to wake up. This thread is going to be so much fun in a couple weeks during the conference tournaments

Coming into the season with the pitching I thought they would be a post season team but when they hit so poorly I wrote them off. I only knew of a few position players so I didn't know if that was expected or not. I'll take my medicine like a man though.
Conference tournament week should be a blast since no Louisiana teams have a at large bid locked up.

Lions are (finally) back in the top #100 RPI. Have to take care of business this weekend vs a good UCA on the road. Just have to again win 2-of-3.

But, the real potential for a RPI boast (which was the obvious point of scheduling these games) is next week starting with a final mid-week v/s USA and concluding the season with a Thursday-Friday series v/s Houston.

Though, Southeastern's RPI going into the Southland tourney will still not he high enough to qualify for an at-large. They'll have to go back to winning the Tournament this season to get the auto-bid.

Considering the lackluster OOC scheduling this season, I won't be all that disappointed if the Lions don't make the NCAAs. Although, they've made the NCAAs in the last 2 seasons (including last season's at-large) and 3 out of the last 4. So, it would a regression on paper anyway.

Lion Up!

Schmidt & Harris have been a great one-two punch on the weekends. With the Cajuns at least getting competent hitting from 5/9 of the lineup, things have come together.

I don't think OOC was bad scheduling, I think a lot of it was teams that are traditionally top 50 had down years.

The Green Wave won't do a thing until the AD corrects the terrible hire he made 2 years ago.
We also have one of the worst pitching coaches in the country (and he was bad at prior schools); but it's the head coach that hired him.

RPI guru on Ragin Pagin said the following:

quote:

Not true. All other things being equal ... If the Cajuns win out at home (4-0) and take 2/3 at Texas State, this places them at #48 in the current RPI rankings. Winning out (7-0) puts them at #40.

Of course, all other things will not necessarily be equal ... some will depend on what the teams around the Cajuns in the rankings do ... as well as the Cajuns' opponents and opponents' opponents.

40th RPI would put the Cajuns IN (before the SBC tournament).

6-1 with the loss being on the road (this is important) would put them at 48 before the tournament.

D1 Baseball article on Southeastern

LINK

quote:

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana coach Matt Riser isn’t shy. He knows exactly where his team stands from a postseason standpoint with just two weeks left to the regular season.

They won’t make the postseason without winning the conference tournament, the brutal reality this time of year for many programs in perceived mid-major conferences.

“This is a club where we know where we are from an RPI standpoint,” Riser said. “We played so many home games. I think we played the right schedule, but we just played too many of those games at home. The RPI will climb later in the season with some of the teams we have left to play, but of course, it won’t rise to where it needs to be.

“With that said, I really like the club that we have right now,” he continued. “The arms. We have those. We have a good rotation and I think we might have the deepest pitching staff we’ve ever had. It really reminds me of that 2015 staff. We have guys with experience and we’ve got a lot of arms, so we don’t have to throw the same guys over and over. I think we can make some noise in the postseason if we can just get in. We feel like we could get on a roll if we just find a way to make the tournament.”

quote:

As for the Lions as a team, I know it’s tough to draw conclusions from one or two games. But after seeing this team this past weekend versus the club we saw against UCONN, there’s no doubt in my mind they’ve improved and could make noise with Gaconi, Koestler and power-armed Green leading the way.

Koestler has made 11 starts (13 appearances) and has a 2.51 ERA in 71.2 innings, along with 60 strikeouts and 11 walks, while Green, who can get well into the 90s with his fastball, has a 3.36 ERA in 72.1 innings, along with 49 strikeouts and 11. Then there’s the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Gaconi, who like the other guys, is a contact pitcher who shows excellent command of the zone.
