it's easy to like the four when you get a free pass into it

I think everyone would be satisfied if every FBS program could actually play their way into it. Of course that's not even possible with 8 team CFP so then people would rightfully complain about it being watered down with 12 or 16.

I don't have a huge problem with that. But, let's take this year. Would you put in 11-1 Bama or 10-3 Aubie for at-large

He's 100% right. It just moves the point of contention back. It could eventually get to the point where teams with four losses have an argument for playoff inclusion. frick that.

If Saban got left out this year, he'd be the first guy pounding the expand the playoffs mantra...he'd be on College Gameday crying about expanding the playoffs.
This is the same guy who wanted to ban HUHN offenses.
He doesn't want to win on the field, he wants to control CFB to win..and ESPN keeps giving him the pulpit the day before the vote by parading him on every show to cry and plead and beg to be in the BCS or the playoff.

That's not wrong.
frick it. We should go back to the BCS.

Which is why I support going to 4 teams so that anyone who deserves to be in the championship game gets their shot.
Because that totally happened this year

The most common model I see is around mid-December. For the players, that is right in the middle of exams. They're theoretically students, after all. In the football calendar, that is right in the middle of the new recruiting signing period
Well this works for DIII, DII, and FCS don't see why it won't work for FBS

How does that work for UCF this year?
Or, hypothetically, if all P5 champions go undeafted?

No I just was 8. After that, it's too much
I agree. Sure the 9th team and their fans will be upset especially if they feel they were as good as 6-8 or whatever but fact is those teams barely deserve it anyway and at least with 8 you get all teams that are worthy.

$atan would be singing a different tune if they had (appropriately) been left out of the top 4. If you don't believe that, you missed his day of whining while the conference championships were all being played.

Sam Houston State was in a playoff game last week, had final exams this week, and a playoff game today. The academic argument has always been an empty one.

“I don’t care if we have 68 teams in it, we’ll still have a two-hour show on who shouldn’t have got in, just like they do in (NCAA) basketball.”
This is such a weak argument, especially trying to bring NCAA basketball into it.
Arguing between #4 & #5 or #7 & #8 is a much MUCH different scenario than arguing #65 & #66 or even #16 & #17. The quality drops off immensely. Nobody expects the 64th team that gets in the NCAA tournament to have a viable chance to win a National Championship.
Now would anyone think the #5-8 teams this year could possibly beat any of the other top 4 teams? Absolutely.
Ohio St would have just a good a chance to win it all as Georgia does IMO. Much higher at least than say Notre Dame.
An 8 team playoff is definitely viable.
