I was walking off after the horn and there was a massive lightning strike that I swore hit a camera stand near us, could definitely hear something. Was pretty scary.

Metal scaffolding a couple of stories high is a magnet for lightning. I wonder if temporary structures like that are grounded?

That picture shows why you don’t stand under trees.

It hit a tree and sounds like part of the tree hit people standing nearby

There were no tree branches on the ground. We were 1 hole over. Loud as hell.

Grounding itself doesn't matter. The structure would need an actual air terminal designed to receive lightning. If that doesn't exist, lightning will hit the structure and do whatever it's going to do. A little rod buried in the ground does nothing to help that.
