$1800 for some of the small schools is probably a good chunk.

this is the MAXIMUM that they could spend in addition to current costs. This is if the school used the highest level official in every single sport over the year. this is not the increase for football alone.

Asking for a $5 raise to offset rising expenses is not trying to make it a full time job. And yes I do know people in the softball and baseball world that try to make it into one by travelling all across the country to call. This is not the issue.
And you want good refs? Get out there with us and help us, numbers would help. That way weaker officials could stick to the lower games instead of having to put them in the 4A/5A games.

We use MPSA refs, so it shouldn't effect our season. Hope it gets all worked out.

JJ i'm not sure that's legal... you can't play those teams so why would you be able to use their refs?

here's my solution: the ref fees gradually go up, with classes C, B, and 1A having the lowest and 5A the highest

some sort of system where the home team and the visitors split between choosing the refs and paying for them is needed

So taking somebody off the street would be better than the officials you have now....who are demanding a pay raise.

Doesn't exactly help you argument.

these arguments are silly anyway. there is no pool of 'replacement officials'. they cant get someone off the street and have then approved by the federation.

simply put, the LHSOA officials will be used or football will not be played.

and although all of the associations appear to be standing down, we are all training and beginning our pre season process with the expectation that we will have a season. and i hope we do have a season.

Not talking about WM. I help out at a middle school. Not a full time gig, it doesn't pay enough for me to make the change to be a full time coach. I can honestly make the same amount in 2 days of contract work that I make for the entire season coaching.

Hell, maybe we should strike too.

Th article makes a good point. The budgets for the fiscal year have been turned in. Sounds like the officials came to the party too late to demand more.

If you find a school that doesn't have 1800 in discretionary spending I will kiss your butt.

Also, the 1800 is a max only if across all sports they use the highest tier officials.

And if the schools can't pick up 1800 at the turn styles, they have bigger issues

The LHSOA proposed this back in March or April giving the PA plenty of time to meet their July 1st deadline.

one great example is the baseball/softball half game fee.

Those officials are asked to plan ahead, travel and be at the event an hour in advance

None of the umpires get there an hour in advance. 20 minutes would be fine, and you'd never have a complaint.

Then if the game rains out last minute (a decision to call the game is made by the school administrator) the officials used to get a half game fee.

I don't think "half game" is warranted, but maybe $10-15 cash for gas money is fine.

As my esteemed colleague from Ponchatoula stated, all that will happen is the price of admission, which is already ridiculously high, will go up.

Eddie Bonine is on Culotta and the Prince this AM, he sounds pretty contrite in his feelings. I think both sides need to come to the table, egos at the door and hat in hand. Gotta have an honest conversation where both sides are going to benefit in a considerable manner.

That would be pretty messed up.

I think a half game is acceptable.

LaRosa is an asshat. Dude told me one time that the Seahawks shouldn't be allowed to have an outdoor stadium because its too cold in Seattle and isn't fair to teams that play indoors

Assistant coach in the school district I live in gets $2000 as a football supplement.

Works 30 hrs per week in August before the season starts.

Works 40 hours per week in season. (In addition to full time teaching job)

let's assume they don't make the playoffs. That's around 490 hours for $2000.

Comes out to around $4.08 per hour, and that's not counting summer workouts or 7 on 7.

I'd like to hear official's pay breakdown done similarly, and let's see who's getting paid less for what they do.

Yeah we received zero extra for Spring practice and pass skel over the summer. Doesn't bother me at all. It's about helping kids personally.

Eddie Bonine and the LHSAA do nothing unless the principals approve...

and yes maybe it's time for admission to go up if it has to to pay the officials. it won't break people to pay $10 to get in as opposed to the $8 they already do

Is your assistant coach also a full time employee of the school?

Let me just say, that you Lake Charles refs are the worst in the state, but at least you don't need a raise considering Barbe pays extra ;)

I think it's eight bucks at the local high school.
