No matter how much money you have and how many people admire you, losing by 22 points in game 1 is tough

No, but if 3-4 (or 3-5), despite everything else, precludes one from GOAT status, then 1-8 and 0-8 should really diminish their status on the same continuum.

Jordan is obviously the GOAT, but it's not just because of his championships. And despite his better NBA finals record, Lebron is considerably better than Kobe (your guy). So obviously there is more to the equation.

Not according to that poster's logic, he lost more seasons than he won.

Moral of the story for both of you: don't use hyperbole

After you learn the definition of it first though.

Fairly certain that poster meant that literally.

Hyperbole

quote:

exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.

Also hyperbole:

quote:

I think we should revoke the HOF (player) status of Elgin Baylor (0-8 in Finals) and Jerry West (1-8 in Finals).

Again, pretty sure he meant it literally.

It's not hyperbole when using the standard that the poster set. So for that to be interpreted as hyperbole, then Lebron's automatic disqualification from achieving GOAT status, is also hyperbole. So then I take your interpretation as evidence that Lebron is not disqualified from GOAT status by his Finals record alone.

You took his standard (which y'all are taking way too literal btw) and exaggerated it to make your point. That's pretty much the definition of the word.

Exactly what I said...

Correct

So by taking the literal interpretation of his premise, then I created hyperbole? Hmmmm. Or maybe if a literal interpretation of a premise results in hyperbole, then maybe the premise was hyperbolic go begin with.
quote:

Exactly what I said...
So then we are in agreement, and the hyperbole rests in the other poster's premise.

The literal interpretation had nothing to do with HOF status but nice try

No it's in yours and his like I said in the first place

It's all part of the same ranking continuum.

GOAT and HOF criteria are completely different and you know it. But you needed to make your point

It actually speaks for the need to make the other point when you apply it to 1 and not the other, very inconsistent. It begs of knowing it's flawed but still needing to fill that narrative already created however possible.

I'm not exactly sure what point you're talking about but it seems fairly reasonable that there would be additional criteria to be the best player of all time versus one of the best

Also the change in GOAT criteria would be more volatile depending on who is in the conversation than HOF criteria would be

LeBron is the John Elway of the NBA. He has won a couple of championships but he has also lost a lot.

(1) LeBron's legacy will not be decided in this series. He is playing a great team that was pretty heavily favored going into the series.

(2) LeBron has not lost a lot. Think about how many superstars have won 3+ championships. It's not extensive. Think about how many superstars have been to eight NBA finals. It's not extensive.
