Yeah and it’s a shame because an FA Cup would be wildly entertaining for basketball, but it simply can’t exist in our closed pro sports system.

And the owners will never jeopardize that closed system, so we’re left with this idea that just arbitrarily calls some games important because they’re “cup games”.

It can be done in this country. Hell, we have the US Open Cup in soccer that is a fun tournament. And if there are enough Americans and foreigners willing to play soccer in America to create 5 tiers of leagues to fill out the Open Cup, you can definitely do it in basketball... but that's obviously not what the NBA is doing here.

It's just another tournament that involves NBA teams.

Is this really happening? I thought it was still in the “just floated, hasn’t been implemented yet” phase. It’s dumb no matter what, but the only way anybody will care about it is if there are actual stakes. And the only stakes I’ve seen mentioned are related to draft spots, and I don’t see why anybody who you’d actually play in these games would want to put the team in a better position to draft their replacement.

Sliver’s slimy, but he’s been pretty good at thinking through unintended consequences. Maybe this will surprise me. But I don’t see any real upside.

You mean Legacy Arena*, which was renovated in 2021 and is now far nicer and can hold 1000 more fans for NBA games than the Smoothie King Center (embarrassing name for an NBA arena btw)

BJCC after renovations is still not up to par with Smoothie King, which is on the lower of the low end of NBA arenas.

Take the homer glasses off. Birmingham needs to stick to the 20 fans that show up for USFL games and the Birmingham Legion. They aren't equipped to truly support a major league sport. Decent mid-tier southern city though.

Who plays in it though? The G League is an option, but that’s still not the same because those are affiliated development teams. So for the players it would matter, but it’s not organizations competing like a true Open Cup. That’s why Barcelona’s B side can’t play in Copa Del Rey or the top flight.

I don’t even know what the next league is after the G League.

There are a bunch of semi-pro leagues out there, but that was my initial point, there is no legit league besides the NBA. The G-league is the only other full pro league out there and that is just a minor league for the NBA, so it's not the same thing as Manchester City playing Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup.

It makes no sense to create another tournament in the middle of the season when it involves only teams that are all already playing each other.

You’re dumb if you don’t think Birmingham would sell out actual sports leagues

Sorry to hear about your smooth brain

I see these games count as reg season games. Are they part of the 82 or additional season games? If additional, how does this solve the load management issue?

60 games for basketball and 100 for MLB is the answer.

As has been pointed out ad nauseam, with the exception of the final these are regular season games. They are among the 82 games. If teams meet up in the knockout round, their future game/one of their future games later in the season gets cancelled

It adds competitive spice to the regular season in a time where football has an attention stranglehold

If you’re complaining that much you simply don’t understand it

I don't think the game has anywhere else to find creativity. People just dont grow up playing sports like they used to.

The NBA is competing with video games and gaming media now.

As long as I can still bet Sabonis "over" points/rebounds/assists every night, I don't give a shite what else they do.

Better yet, the fans who actually buy hats and t shirts.

This entire thing is basically the NBA scrambling to breath life into its pointless regular season that the general public has completely checked out of.
