Late Model legend Scott Bloomquist dies

Damn, had a chance to watch him and that iconic #0 a few times at Batesville and Columbus...he was an absolute legend. Still remember watching the Show Me a few years ago on FLO and watching him win the B Main after losing his left front. IIRC he lost it battling for 3rd and managed to tote the left for several laps and was still passing cars.

That’s awful. He was a legend. Incredibly talented racecar driver. Prayers out to his loved ones.

Saw him dominate the first Alltel 100, $100,000 to win modified race, at Batesville in 2004. Saw him at the Topless several times. Headed there tonight to crew on a modified. He absolutely was a legend. I’d put him up there with Kinser, when it comes to dirt.

He just ran at Cedar Lake at the beginning of the month. He also had a nasty wreck at Eldora in June.
Waking up and seeing this was crazy as I have many close ties and relationships in this sport. A Legend is gone and no one will ever come close. I will say he went out doing what he loves, racing the best and flying and I’m glad that he’s no longer in pain from all the wear on his body and what he has went thru with cancer the last few years.

Best heel in motorsports. I hated Bloomer. On and off the track he was a first class dick. Spent a lot of time in the pits and can say that with honesty.
Never figured out how he got out of the coke charge. Everyone in racing knew he was a partier. I remember hearing a story about him giving Johnny Virden a jar of moonshine one night and it knocking Virden on his tail.
With that said, he was a GOAT driver. I've watched him drive the wheels off of everything all over.

His career in a dirt late model puts him as one of the best to have ever done it. Personally I think Jeff Purvis was better but he went to a pavement career.
I think it was 1989 when Bloomquist showed up for the World 100 with a broken arm. Set quick time in qualifying with his primary car then qualified his backup car second quick behind himself. Those were the days when Bloomquist was in a Warrior and his success then was what put Warrior on the map nationally.
By the mid 90’s he switched to a Barry Wright. BWRC had been around for while but again with Bloomquist in a Barry Wright car it meant that you’d begin to see them pop up in the upper Midwest market which was dominated at the time by Mastersbilts, Parker cars, Fegers, plus a smattering of Shaws, GRTs, Rayburns, and Warriors.
When he was following a tour he knew who to reach out to in every region to get a sense of what to expect for track conditions. One of those guys is a very good friend of mine who 15 or so years ago was building his own dirt late models and was regionally dominant in them. He still is pretty dominant but he’s not building his own cars anymore, he’s getting them from Jimmy Mars. They crossed paths at a few Corn Belt Clash races in Iowa and Wisconsin. Lo and behold, a year later at Cedar Lake some of the stuff that Bloomquist had built into his own cars were copied off of what my buddy was building into his. Bloomquist could take ideas from every chassis out there, build them into his, and make them work the way he wanted them to. Where some could take a Shaw and Rayburn and create a “Shawburn,” Bloomquist could take things from half a dozen different chassis brands, include his own spin on them to make them work together and came up with stuff very uniquely his own.
There was a love/hate relationship between Bloomquist and other drivers. Another friend of mine simply could not stand the guy and at a Lucas Oil race in Wisconsin a few years back there’s a picture of this buddy of mine flipping Bloomquist off as he lapped Bloomquist for the second time on his way to a win. It’s the only time he’s every stuck his middle finger out at another driver and jokes about it saying: “I had to make it obvious the second time I lapped him in case he didn’t see it the first time.”
