What other pro franchise is there to compete with for attention in Orlando?

How about Houston?

Kobe didn't handcuff the Lakers with his salary.

You don't think his salary is an issue? Especially with the penalty for going over the cap?

I don't understand your point of view

Clearly LA is fine with paying the extra money. And it didn't stop them from paying Gasol, Nash, World Peace, and Howard.

The real penalties start hitting next year if they are over - and at that point is makes zero sense to keep a guy on the roster who makes 30 millionish at the tail end of his career.

And money has been an issue even this year - the final straw for Phil not coming back was supposedly him asking for too much money. I understand that part will be contested by people.. the Buss sons don't like Phil because he treats them like amateurs

That extension was signed almost 3 years ago, before the current collective bargaining agreement was negotiated. The current cap penalty rules are new

Right, meaning you agree the Lakers would have preferred not to have signed that deal (with the benefit of hindsight)?

Other rumors were that he would only coach half the games. I wouldn't have paid him more than D'Antoni for half the games, either.

And again, Kobe isn't handcuffing the Lakers. The Lakers handcuffed themselves.

Every current Laker except Nash is off the books after next season. So the penalties won't be that bad for them.

After being the key word there - the Lakers are going to take an absolute bath to field next year what isn't even a playoff team this year (and all the key players except arguably DH will be declining even more with age). Kobe is getting somewhere in the ballpark of 30 million when the salary cap is only around 58 million. That wouldn't be easy to manage even if the Lakers weren't also in an awful position with all of their other "marquee" players

Gasol is through the end of next year (3 year deal 57 million).

DH is a guy they presumably don't want to let walk without getting something real in return... but keeping him means a huge contract they can't afford because of Kobe's salary (and to a lesser extent Gasol, Nash, Artest)

Steve Nash I thought was getting 9.3 million next year and 9.7 million the year after. Is this wrong?

Ron Artest is getting 7.7 million next year

That seems logical given that Kobe is nearing the end of his career.

All of the Lakers contracts come off of the books at the end of the 2014 season

you either need to superimpose a Pelican hat or a Bobcats hat.

This is all from the Cowherd interview with Kupcheck (sp?) today.

He said they have a two year window with Kobe and that is it. Next year is the last year on Kobe's deal and Kupcheck even said Kobe may retire.

He said Howard is the Lakers future and they would not consider a trade. He said the Lakers have two more year of Kobe, this year and next year to get it done and then the window will close. Said Howard is the best center in the NBA and is the future of the Lakers, period.
