Kobe's on-ball perimeter defense is pretty bad compared to what it used to be. When they match him up on an elite scoring wing (Wade, Westbrook, etc.) he can't hang, but he's still effective in help side.

He gets away with a ton of ticky tack fouls on defense, too. He probably should have been called for a foul three times during the Hornets game

Kobe's contract makes him untradeable.

He could basically only go to a contender. How could a contender possibly get better by matching his salary in a deal that would make sense for both teams?

No doubt. jturn was claiming he had a precipitous decline as a player when he is still a juggernaut on offense. The decline of Kobe is not as big as his detractors want it to be. He is obviously not Lebron or Durant, but that is not an insult.

Not many people can.

The Lakers may also do a little better in late games scenarios when Gasol and Nash return because they can ration minutes more to keep guys fresher.

Here's the thing to me - I look at the Lakers' personnel and think they would be a great team if they played more half court instead of up tempo.

it would seem easy to design plays with nash/gasol doing a pick and roll on one side of the floor with DH on the other side (to keep anyone from helping on the backside) - if they come off gasol then seems like kobe and howard score 70% of the time.

I know it isn't that simple but the up tempo D'Antoni thing seems like just a bad fit for their personnel.

Kobe Top 5?!?!? HAHAHAHAHA. Reputations die hard apparently. The guy does not defend anymore. He'll blow an assignment or let a guy blow passed him, and then proceed to yell at his teammates for not helping. It's awful. He's a large part of why their defense is atrocious at times. They are getting torched in the 4th quarter lately.

My bottom line diagnosis is similar to that of a lot of Lakers fans: WTF.

Beyond that I think there is a we didn't hire Phil hangover....everybody was all happy when Mike Brown was fired and thought Phil Jackson was coming back to coach this group of Hall of Famers (well 3 hall of famers.) Supposedly (not sure what really happened) Jackson was asking to not even travel with them team sometimes. Anyways the roster is built to be excellent in the half court and defensively. This is usually what wins the post season. Mike Dantoni is all about running the fast break and basically out scoring your opponenet. It is a weird fit. Maybe when Nash comes back things will improve? I hope so. Gasol is the most awkward and lost in Dantoni's system. It is unfortunate. For the poster that said Kobe is not currently a top 5 player in the NBA....really? He is - believe me. He is one of top 5 NBA players of ALL TIME as well. Bottom line again with regard to the subject line....we're pretty much all like WTF.

If they aren't competing for championships then it would be a terrible idea to keep him. His salary cap # is enormous.

So who the frick is gonna trade for him?

kobe is untradable - he makes no sense for a good team since he would kill their salary cap and he can veto a trade to a bad team that would love him for the attendance

Trading Kobe is not even on the table. Geez. The Lakers are going to see this thing through.

So far you could argue Lebron, Durant, Duncan, Paul, and Anthony have been better when defense is factored in, putting Bryant 6th but that would really be a tossup. He's been right up there

Only Lebron and Durant are better than Kobe right now. In my humble opinion.

I think Paul is better than him. He plays some of the best PG defense in the NBA and makes everyone his team better. Not even just in assists, he's like the Peyton Manning of the NBA with the way he runs his teams
