Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Is LeBron a better player than me? Is Hawkeye better than Green Arrow

Fans love to speculate about who’s the greatest player ever. Is LeBron greater than Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant? Am I better than Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell? While this might be a fun pastime for fans and sports journalists, most players find this kind of alternate universe pondering to be fairly boring, somewhere along the lines of who would win in a fight: Hawkeye or Green Arrow? Aquaman or Sub-Mariner?
In sports, a player develops his style, his skills, his sensibilities based on the time period he grew up in. The way basketball is played today is different to what it was 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Then along come game innovators – whether players or coaches – and the sport evolves. LeBron is one of the best players now and his intelligent combination of team leadership, brawny lay-ups, dominating rebounding, and surgical passing is elevating the game to its next level. Just as Michael Jordan, Jerry West, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and others did. In fact, for those paying attention to the playoffs: Bill Russell went to eight NBA finals in a row, and his teams won all eight.

I didn’t read any of that.
But Lebron would absolutely brutalize Kareem on both ends of the floor.

Neither are Captain America or Iron Man, so who cares.

Kareem was out there busting his buns every night! Tell Lebron to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!

I didn’t know any NBA team has ever won “eight NBA Finals in a row”. Kareem enlightened me some. I knew the Celtics had a run there back in the day but that is incredible. My NBA experience was when Robert Horry, Latrell Sprewell, and the Jordan Bulls were playing. Throw some Shaq and Kobe in their too. By the time Lebron showed up I’d already checked out.

Wasn't expecting an nba thread discussing Namor the Sub-mariner today...

Kareem always answers questions like this that way, why he gained the reputation as aloof and distant as a player, no one could relate to him. Outside of racial/political issues, Kareem generally comes off as articulate and intelligent on many topics just he looks at politics/racial issues though a Black Power racist view (he is a Muslim who supported a ton of the Black Power stuff if we're being frank). Also, per his autobiography and Bill Simmons' Book of Basketball, he entered into a "white-hating period" when he was really young after his high school coach, the great Jack Donahue, said he was (disclaimer: this is from both Kareem's autobiography and Bill Simmons' book) "playing like a ****" during a high school game. We get what we get when it comes to someone like Kareem.

He'd probably fare better against LeBron than Hakeem or people like Kevin McHale, they had too much agility, quickness, and spin moves, hell even Walton took him to the cleaners in 77

Obviously Kareem is saying that you can only judge players by how much they dominated their peers. That's it.
Their era. Were they the best player, win the most MVPs, win the most championships.
And then compare those to other stars in other eras and how many MVPs did they win, how many championships against their peers?
Greatness isn't all-time. That's ludicrous because you can't measure that. Greatness is measured by how great you were vs. the rest of the league when you played.
And if someone dominated his era more, then it follows he was greater.

That is the dumbest thing in a long list of dumb things you’ve said.

Hmmm....Kareem averaged 30 pts. and 16 boards a game in that series to Walton's 19 and 14 but o.k.

I watched that whole series, every game. Maurice Lucas was the man. Walton was solid but to say he took Kareem to the cleaners I can tell you didn't watch the series.

Doesn’t matter.
He lost.
You can’t be great and lose in a team sport.
