So I dont see why people blame the players here

because they know (or their agents know) the market rate goes up each year. If their clients don't want to be bound by the terms of their contracts and always want to be the top paid at their position, then maybe they shouldn't be signing long-term deals.

There is no logical reason for Julio to do this. If Falcons have any go-nads, they arent budging. Julio is about to turn 30, could be on the downswing of his career pretty soon. You dont go out generally and want to extend this deal more years for the highest amount..

quote:

When players are unhappy with their contracts, it usually is easy to pinpoint why. Either the player has outperformed his contract or the NFL market has changed. A player also could be in the final year of his contract and is worried something could derail his free agency the following season.
None of these situations apply to Jones.

so players should renegotiate their contracts on a yearly basis to make sure they're pay ranking is commensurate with their abilities at their position?
I mean teams cut them and then pay them zero sometimes, so cry me a river for the teams

The Falcons have all the leverage here, and I'd tell Julio to play or be prepared to be paid nothing for 2 years. And let's not pretend like guaranteed contracts would stop joe blow from trying to renegotiate if someone else started being paid more than him. That's how egos work.

@RapSheet The #Falcons had made clear to Julio Jones they’ll re-do his deal next year, but that is not, at this point, enough. In recent years, Antonio Brown, Marshawn Lynch, and Rob Gronkowski have seen their deals reworked by moving money forward from a future season. An option here.

Because he wants to be adequately paid?

So in your office you’d be fine with sitting at the exact same salary for 3 years despite excellent performance and others in your field doubling your salary? You’d stay loyal to that company?

3 years is likely 30 percent of his career. That’s a long arse time in NFL career terms. 30 percent of a normal persons career span would be like 12-15 years

quote:

Hate that he's acting like this, the city of Atlanta has supported him since day 1.

He’s not sitting out because of the city of Atlanta or the fans. He’s sitting out so he can get properly compensated for his value and risk of injury at his age.

Smart. Although hes good, hes at the end of high production. They have learned not to be strapped in to overpaying older players who demand guaranteed money. In this day and age, it kills the franchise long term.

Julio will lose somewhere around 1.24 million for sitting out camp if the Birds decide to play hardball. Do it TD!

Conversely if he does hold out until Labor Day, he likely wouldn't be active for the Thursday road game, but the Falcons would have to pay him around 700K, for watching the game from his couch.

The difference is that unlike Julio, I'm not under contract.

very few people work under contracts, and certainly not contracts for 5 years. And those that do, yes they typically honor those contracts

you sure about that?

If he holds out, he doesn't get paid that much according to this article
quote:

Jones has three years remaining on his contract, which includes a $10.5 million base salary this year. He could lose $617,000 each week if the hold-out lasts into the regular season.

Might as well start an NFL holdout thread with Mack and Donald not being close at all to deals.

The NFL “breaks” those contracts all the time. Not sure why you hold one side to that but not the other. Both are using the leverage they have.

I’m sure the Falcons would be happy to raise his yearly salary if he’ll give back the huge fricking upfront bonus he surely got. Almost all of you defending him are forgetting this. He, rightfully, chose a bunch of guaranteed money up front in the form of a bonus. Can’t have it both ways.
