When you are about to be 86, IMO you have earned the right to walk away from anything on your own terms, whenever the notion strikes you. Good for him.

When my wife's grandmother died at 90 years old, I remember sitting in the hospital holding and rubbing her hand. She looked up at me and said, "I'm tired trying, I'm tired of fighting. I'm ready to go. I was in my early 30s when that happened. I never really could comprehend why she said that when I was younger. I'm now 46 and with each passing year I find myself falling more and more in alignment with how she felt.

And working with Suzyn [Waldman] is a lark.
Spoken like a true geriatric

Not efforting to be intrusive in any way, but did she have a long list of health problems during her life? (Cancers, large heart problems, etc) Even minus that, 90 is a good, long life regardless.

No kidding I think Suzyn would be an amazing broadcast partner. She's fantastic.

She ended up with dying of lung cancer, but she dealt with a lot. She raised her kids, and her daughter ended bed ridden of multiple sclerosis. So she had to take care of her and her grand daughter (my now wife). One of kids ended up on drugs and had four kids, so she raised those kids as well.

Goodness, Gracious, SirWinston -- Of all the dramatic things I could ever see -- imagine Suzyn Waldman paired up with Bill Walton! (unless she was paired up with Roger Clemens of course).

John Sterling (unaware of a Live Mic after the Astros Game):

quote:
"Ya know Suzyn, frankly I'm 86 years old tired....
"But mostly as of last Monday, I am sick and tired of your incessant yammering as I'm trying to make my signature 'it is high, it is far' blown home run calls and annoying signature, "Th-e-e-e-e Yankees WIN!' calls. Stop your kvetching and crying about the Yanks not winning a a pennant since they stuck me in the booth with you. Oh. And your signature, 'Goodness Gracious' Clemens call? 17 years ago. Let it go."

I hate Sterling and his broadcasting with a passion, but I greatly respect him walking away on his own terms and even admitting he should have done it sooner.
