Testaverde was injured in a scooter wreck and missed some practice time and the last regular season game. He also won a bunch of awards leading up to the Fiesta Bowl and had all that going on too.
I would say those factors plus Penn State having a good defensive game plan led to the upset. Miami outgained PSU something like 450/150 but the turnovers killed them.
I don’t know why Testaverde wasn’t pulled. Guess it’s hard to pull a Heisman winner. But Miami never should have lost that game.
Johnson has always said the 1986 team was his best at Miami and that losing that game was his most bitter defeat.
