Basically the policy is supposed to reimburse tax free medical costs from the league and these dudes were filing phony claims for the tax free income

Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Joe Horn is among several ex-NFL players who have been implicated in an alleged plot to defraud a healthcare program for league retirees. Prosecutors on Thursday said Horn, who now lives in South Carolina, faces a count of conspiracy to commit health care in a case being pursued at a federal courthouse in Kentucky. In a statement, the feds said Horn’s alleged misdeeds are contained in a bill of information, which suggests he is cooperating in the broader investigation and has already possibly negotiated a plea deal.
The feds said a grand jury has handed up charges against eight other former players, including ex-star running back Clinton Portis. Those defendants are accused of filing nearly $4 million in false claims under a program that was created in 2006 and was meant to provide tax-free reimbursements for out-of-pocket medical care expenses not covered by insurance.

Portis career earnings 43.1M in 9 seasons. Was reported broke owing more than 5M in 2015, 5 years removed from league.

Assholes. How many millions did these two make in the league?
I’m all for throwing white collar criminals under the jail. If you get stuck up by someone, its likely by some guy who is homeless, poor, on drugs, etc. no excuse obviously but at least there’s a reason.
