You forgot his walks too. Im too lazy to go look up the actual number, but he is top-10 in career walks as well. For future sports trivia night: he also just recently set the MLB record for most walk off HRs.

Ive spoken with Thome quite a few times and had the oppurtunity to work out with him before. He and I have a mutual friend (Thome's personal trainer in Chicago during the offseason is a Thibodaux, LA boy) and, when Thome was with the Sox, he'd hook me up with tickets whenever I was in town. Super nice guy. And he is like that with everyone, regardless if youre a multi-million dollar baseball player or just a friend of a friend.

Ummm over 600 home runs and well over 2,000 hits and you hope he gets in?
I know the PED's taint his numbers and I know thome hasn't been linked, but I just never know how sportswriters are going to treat that era

1,736 career walks in 22 seasons
for reference, Bonds had 2,558 in 22 seasons

51st all time in OBP

the fact that he was overshadowed in Cleveland by Man Ram, Belle, Lofton, Alomar, etc really hurt the way he is viewed. But he was a monster back then.
also had sabermetrics become more popular about 10 years before, he'd get a lot more notoriety
He's 42 and its like he is sneaking up on everyone. But anyone that followed baseball passionately knew about Thome. It was the media that just never really gave him the credit he was do, mainly because of the other HOF caliber players he played with.

who else was I supposed to name as a reference point? they've played the exact same number of seasons up to this point and are both 600 .. 2,000 guys.

My dad met him at an airport once and got me his autograph when I was a kid. Said he's one of the nicest athletes he's ever met.

Well Bonds does have over 2000 more PA than Thome
12606 For Bonds
10222 for Thome
12606 For Bonds
10222 for Thome

Ah good info. Didn't think to look that up. Was just trying to find a comparable player to gauge Thome's walk rate against.

I used to love Thome back when he played for the Indians. Even with all the stud players they had through the 90's he was always my favorite.

i know you love to drop those bonds stats

well there's a lot of them

He absolutely is without a doubt! He is from my home town and I've met him a few times. I was bartending one time back in the day and he came in and sat at the bar for awhile by himself drinking vodka tonics and would tip $20 after each one..drank about 5 before he sat to eat. Each person that would come up to him to say hello he would genuinely engage them in conversation and was cool to every one. He also does a ton of charity work in the central Illinois area. One of the best of all time IMO.

You could make an argument for that. Throw Konerko up there too. Just don't understand why Paul doesn't get more love.
Yeah I started a thread about Konerko being underrated a few months ago. I really don't understand in particular how these 2 don't get more love.

Bonds averaged 162 walks per 162 games
Thome 112 per 162 games
Thome 112 per 162 games

I think he is under-appreciated in that he has been one of the great players from his era and does not get mentioned as often as he should
RE: Frank Thomas vs Jim Thome - Thomas had one of the greatest starts to a career ever and then petered out. Between 1990 and 2000 I think Thomas was one of the most dominant hitters in baseball.
frank
jim
When you look at the numbers those two guys are somewhat similar but I think (despite the overall edge in homers to Thome) that Frank was the better hitter (his OBP, AVG, & OPS were better with fewer strikeouts). Because Frank's early career was so much better than his later career it leaves you less impressed than it should have otherwise (Frank Thomas is a guy who won 2 MVPs & yet few people probably remember that)

Palmeiro's issue is obviously the self-righteous finger waving in front of Congress - shortly followed by a positive steroid test.
He made a lot of members of the media look stupid when they talked him up as a bastion of integrity and then he turned out to just be a hypocrite. His reputation for integrity (as well as his consistent excellence) was perhaps his best asset and he threw it away

Ditto, Thome and Lofton are my two favorite Indians. Thome never wanted to leave Cleveland and loved the city and fans. Im a huge fan.
