re: Jason Garrett says Saban made call to pass on Drew Brees in Miami "We're not doing that!"

Hasn't Saban said that? Basically said that was his biggest regret or something like that
I always felt that Nick Saban's statements insinuated that the doctors determination stopped HIM from being able to sign Drew Brees.
I mean, it was clear from the start that Nick Saban had basically complete control and a LOT of deference from the owner.

But as intriguing as Moss's relocation is, it doesn't carry nearly the same potential impact as Saban's landing in Miami. Indeed, nobody in the NFL grabbed more power this offseason. And if there is any doubt about that, one only needed to corner Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga a few weeks ago at the owners' meetings in Washington D.C.
Huizenga's popular retort to almost every football-operation question was to defer to his new head coach. Whether it was Ricky Williams, the character issues with some of the team's draft picks or free agents, or the future of the general manager position, Huizenga's party line was singular: "Whatever Nick does is good with me."
The Dolphins owner has done what he vowed never to do again and turned over complete organizational control to one man. The roster? The front office? The janitorial schedule? It's all run through Saban. If only for that, Saban's hire would be the most important move in the NFL this offseason, but there are other factors to consider, too.
So I'm sure he regrets it but I think he more tried to play and negotiate with Brees and it blew up in his face than got told he couldn't sign him. I think he plays up the idea of being told "No" to diffuse some of the blame so he looks a bit better.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Saban actually hid some physical tests from the Saints that allowed them to pull the trigger on Brees. So he helped him.
How would that work? The Saints had their own medical staff that reviewed his shoulder, surgery, etc. AND Brees stopped by the Saints first before going to visit Miami.
I remember seeing an interview with the one that reviewed Brees shoulder for the Saints and how it was so stressful.

Where do y'all get this shite? Compare the Dolphins the year before and the year after Nick was there.
He was sub .500 and passed on a HoF QB to trade a second rounder for a guy coming off a 3 ligament knee blowout who would play 4 games before being released, then fled town and the NFL forever.

Even Saban has been wrong a lot in player evaluations. He went by metrics/measureables a lot just like the NFL.

Im pretty sure the medical team told him the prognosis for that injury and he acted on the advice
At the time Culpepper was considered really good
Absolutely. There were legit reasons to be dubious about signing Brees considering his injury at the time. Payton made his choice, Saban made his. Why people feel the need to make excuses for Saban is bizarre. It worked out pretty good for him.

There were 8 other teams which needed quarterbacks that did not even bring Brees in for a workout because of worries about the torn labrum. His own team, the Chargers, was only oiferuing two million in guaranteed money.
The Saints rolled the dice and won big. Before you say it is anything more than luck some of the same folks were trying to risk more for Deshaun Watson,

Tesm drs had to be a major factor to Saban because Brees checked a lot of boxes on what he likes in a QB.

Brees went on to throw for 62K yards after that decision and Saban ran back to the SEC where he could cheat and out-talent the rest of competition.
