Im hate defending Gene Smith, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Its really easy to say we should have given up the bowl last year, but it wasnt so obvious last year.

Plus this year I would hate to potentially play Bama. we are good but I think we would get smoked. ND I think would be a different story.

I don't completely blame Gene Smith or OSU given the NCAA's history of looking the other way when it comes to investigating the Big Ten and Ohio State in particular. Look at the laughable joke of an "investigation" of the program the NCAA conducted when Clarett was there. Why wouldn't Gene Smith be confident? It took documented lies to intentionally play ineligible players that had taken extra benefits along with being a repeat violator from basketball to get a bowl ban. Most schools receive something closer to a USC type penalty under the same circumstances.

Yes, it was pretty obvious and I was shocked when they didn't self-impose a bowl ban. After all the talk about how mean and unfair the NCAA was to USC, did you really think they could just give OSU a comparative slap on the wrist?

It makes the University pay... Financially for not getting to go bowling. It makes the University become more aware and abide by the rules. The University and Athletic Department let this happen under their noses..

Is it REALLY that hard to comprehend why they are suffering?

ETA: I do feel bad for the current players and the fans because I would hate if a few people fricked over LSU. I am sympathetic, but I understand the punishment

I just can't get over the NCAA closing an NCAA investigation because "Mr Clarett wouldn't answer his cell phone". When has that stopped them from busting a school in the past? If OSU fans didn't whine so much about Alabama and SEC oversigning I wouldn't bother pointing out your fanbase's hypocrisy.

They could have taken their probation last season but decided to "outsmart" the system. By thinking a 1st season coach would have a lesser bowl than the Gator bowl.

The tried to outsmart the system like the did with the Sugar Bowl.

To Hell with tOSU. Blatant Cheaters, blatant idiots.

Well, it is what it is. At least we get a ahead start in recruiting.

Here is LSU and a great bowl season. Go out and kick some arse.

They did get a slap on the wrist when you consider the violations occured within a previous probation window and involved a head coach blatantly lying to the NCAA which resulted directly in a full season of ineligible players being played. Alabama received a much harsher penalty as a first time offender (no repeat violator window involved like with Ohio State) when ONE single ineligible player (as opposed to 5) played a full season. The Alabama case also didn't involve any Alabama coaches actually lying to the NCAA. Alabama lost 21 scholarships with a bowl ban while OSU lost only 9 total scholarships. That's the kinda of selective enforcement the NCAA is famous for.
