Shows got there in the late 80s. They had talent back in the 70s and 80s but the city of West Monroe really grew in the 90s, making WMHS one of the largest in the state. Shows and Arledge brought college coaching experience and implemented it in high school. Arledge watches just as much film as college coaches do which is one of the reasons his defenses are so good. Shows made football something WM was proud of thereby bringing out all of the athletes roaming the halls that would not normally play ball. I know when I trasnferred back to WM, I wasn't playing football. Shows literally pulled me out of class telling me I needed to show up at practice that afternoon.
Coach Sanders brought a S&C program that was unknown in high schools at the time. My sophomore year we had 5 guys squatting over 600 lbs and would have had another but he hurt his leg in preseason practice.

Damn. That's the first time anyone has really broke it down for me like that. I went to NLU(well ULM now of course)from 98-2000 and we only had a few people there I talked to on the reg that played at WM and none of them really explained it like that. They were just really becoming legendary around 98, before that I was on the ECA nutsack and wondering what made them so great. I was obsessed with trying to figure out what made these guys 12 notches better than anyone else and why couldn't my school be just as good.

It's cool knowing and realizing a coach or coaches can make that huge of a difference.

I can't really tell you what happened before the 90's. I've heard local politics had a lot to do with it. West Monroe has always been a small community that had better things to do than watch football. Shows did for WM what Dinardo tried to do with LSU: Bring back the magic. Once he got the ball rolling, it has just kept on going. And say what you want about having more talent than everyone around here, but the 1993 team had only a couple of seniors go D1 and neither of them played in college, and the 1996 team only had one D1 senior player. It hasn't always been about talent.

I believe that too, I just know now the talent pool is pretty decent. And in those days(93-96) all you heard about was Tommy Banks.

Ah that TD against Florida in 97 was so money. I think I still have that Sports Illustrated laying around the house somewhere.

I also remember the big deal about Bradie James transferring from Wossman to WM in 98. I was at NLU that year and a bunch of dudes from Wossman were pissed. Apparently they viewed him as somewhat of an Uncle Tom.....I never got that impression though.

They did banish everything Confederate from the campus as well as any apparel affiliated with the school. I think it will happen eventually though.

Changed from Johnny Reb to that stupid looking Running rebel in 1989 after Shows got there. The original stadium had the Confederate Flag and Johnny Rebel painted on the street side of it.
