They lost less games than LSU last year and the same amount as Alabama. 2 years ago they lost one. Alabama lost 1 two years ago, too.
LSU has two national championships in the last 12 years and yet LSU consistently has to be behind them in the polls at the beginning of the year.
Even when LSU beat Oregon in the ground on a neutral site in 2011, the writers started to say that they deserved a mulligan until they lost again, just because they put up 76 points against a crap Washington State or Cal team.

It fails because you're just off-setting the eyeball test and preconceived bias by one degree. You can't qualify, for example, USC's win over Stanford at this point without applying the same biased perception and eyeball test to Stanford. We think Bama is good because we just think Bama is good, and that bothers you. The only reason USC's win over Stanford is good, is because we just think Stanford is good. There is still no merit applied. It's too early, and by the time a clear picture comes together, the polls will resemble a power ranking. It can't be done now.
Yes, well said. Great post.

Completely hypothetical question that won't happen but just imagine if it did: If Michigan loses at home to Miami (Ohio), do the writers drop Notre Dame from 9 back to the low teens? Because that's taking this argument to the next level.

Ehhh why would this be an illegitimate move?

You guys got Oregon after losing our biggest senior class in the last 20 years. I really hope we can get a rematch at some point. Oregon would be favored against LSU now.

I was getting at the Oregon always shites the bed thing. last year only 1 team went undefeated. EVERY other team had shate the bed. Alabama did 2 years ago, the Oregon lost in a make-a-play game vs Stanford. 3 years ago everyone lost. I don't consider Oregon in 2012 losing to Stanford a "shite the bed" moment because if they lost before Alabama to A&M, they're in the NC beating the crap out of ND.
The majority of this board was saying we would lose because we always lose to teams more physical. Then we win and now MICH ST is looked upon as a great but not elite team because they lost to an elite team on the road. If they won it would be "MICH ST is for real and Oregon once again couldn't beat a more physical team."
Since Oregon won it is "MICH ST is in the b1g so they aren't what we thought they were and Oregon is yet to play someone real."

I am not mad at all, actually. I thought we'd lose that game. Today, I think we can step on the field and go toe to toe.

This is so true.

NO LSU and USC are way too high.

No, because USC shouldn't be in the top 25 based on results.

Nope. You beat a big 10 team by 4 with no defense.

what has florida st done this year to warrant being ranked #1?
what has ohio st done to warrant being ranked?
what has Texas A&M done to warrant not being top 3?

Obviously every poll incorporates bias at some level, but I think this is a good attempt to make it entirely performance based, and not just incremental based on preseason standings.

Haha for that game Oregon had 13 returning starters compared to LSU's....... 13.
Oh and Oregon was favored by 3.5 points.

HIs poll is stupid early in the season it can't be based on performance when you only have 2 points of data to base it on.
How do you know a win against Wisconsin is more impressive than a win over Arkansas when both are 0-1?
So to have a poll based on performance and not on preconceived bias, I'd just have a T-1 with every team that's 2-0.
