Is there any defunct franchise more revered than the Brooklyn Dodgers?

the dodgers left brooklyn in 1957. however, i have always found it interesting that it seems like the popularity of that franchise has only seemed to grow in the 60 years that have come since they left the borough. i believe that major league baseball estimates about 10 million dollars worth in sales of brooklyn dodger merchandise every year, i read that the baseball hall of fame reports that both old broadcasts and photos of the brooklyn dodgers are the second biggest sellers behind the yankees. i also read that the library of congress has like over 100 books about the franchise. this is before we get into the fact that the franchise leaving is still a major event for the citizens of brooklyn and this is before we get into the movies and documentaries
has there been any other defunct franchise that has had this same scenario? that the fact that the team is no longer existing or in its original location seems to add to its legacy with every passing decade?

Baseball was by far the biggest sport in the country, and the Dodgers were in the country's major population center. Lots of people to pass down that memory and that allegiance to their posterity combined with a recent resurgence in Brooklyn pride coming both from within and outside the Borough. Lot of factors play in.

At Kobe and Shaq's peak in LA the Minneapolis Lakers were fairly prevelant.

From a brand standpoint? People love the Hartford Whalers

I'm not going to say they're more famous than the Brooklyn Dodgers, but in hockey circles I would say the Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques are more legendary now than they were when they existed
Someone beat me to it

the whalers is a good example

I wouldn't say it's interest. They were a polarizing team of that era with possibly the most polarizing player in baseball history. People are drawn to Jackie Robinson, not to learning more about what was the Brooklyn Dodgers franchise.
It's the equivalent of if the Bulls ever left Chicago. People would be buying Jordan pictures and jerseys long after the team left just like they do JR.

Read the "Boys of Summer" by Roger Kahn. It's a favorite of mine.
I also have a framed picture of Jackie Robinson stealing home.

Brooklyn Dodgers are #1
I still see a ton of people wearing Seattle Supersonics stuff. All of the sports stores still carry Sonics merchandise as well.

Brooklyn is of great importance to NYC mythology -- especially NY Jewish mythology. I could never list all the important cultural figures from there: Woody Allen, Joseph Heller, Barbra Streisand, Bobby Fischer, most of the Brill Building songwriters like Carole King... It will always trump rivals.
I won't compare it to Brooklyn, but the Baltimore Colts fanbase was very devoted after Irsay moved the team.

not to learning more about what was the Brooklyn Dodgers franchise.

Baltimore Colts was the first name that came to mind, but I doubt anyone sells as much merchandise as Brooklyn.
