Is there a worse big game program than Oklahoma?

OU won the 2000 national championship, beating FSU 13-2 in the ugliest national championship game college football has ever seen.
After a decade of mostly sucking in the 1990's, it seemed like this young coach Bob Stoops had OU back as a national power.
And since then OU has indeed been a power in the Big12, winning a ton of games and the Big12 title just about every year it seems.
However since that game they have not delivered another national title, blowing an astounding number of opportunities to do so, let's review...
2003 - Lost to LSU in championship game 21-14
2004 - Lost to USC in championship game 55-19
2008 - Lost to Florida in championship game 24-14
They have made two CFP appearances now
2015 - Lost to Clemson in semifinal 37-17
2017 - Lost to Georgia in semifinal 54-48
That's 5 postseason opportunities in a row in about 15 years, all losses, and many by embarrassing blowouts.
No other program has blown more opportunities over that time span. Ohio State has come close but Ohio State also managed to deliver in 2014.
At some point isn't this a major indictment of the style of football the Big12 plays? OU is clearly the best overall program in the Big12 and has been for about 20 years now and yet they crumble when on the big stage for the actual prizes.
They crow about winning consolation Sugar Bowls or beating up on Tennessee, but it's clear they don't play championship caliber football in the Big12.

They lost the semifinal in double OT with the Heisman winner coming off being sick. It's not like they shat the bed.

Ohio State is 3-3 in CFP/BCS Championship games.
But we definitely have some very notable blowouts (Clemson, Florida, etc.)

Yea, that game was amazing. They didn’t blow their chance. That was a great game.

Stoops winning a NC early after being a Spurrier assistant. Yeah 1 seems disappointing now.

If it were JUST that game it'd be one thing, but it's continuing a notable two decades of big game postseason failure.

OU is a great program. It's dumb to think otherwise.

LSU since 2007 OU at least gets to the game. LSU really in a decade has floundered on the stage as much as I hate to say it. Their big wins have all turned to be fools gold.

I don't think the results of games that happened before many of the current players were born and that was coached by 2 coaches ago had much impact of yesterday's game.

They’re the Kansas Basketball of College Football. One of the top programs every year, but can’t cash in.

Was just coming here to post the same thing. If chalmers didn’t that shot bill self would not be coaching Kansas right now

2008 was a hard fought loss to a phenomenal Florida team. Last night was an instant classic. Neither loss is embarrassing.
Plus Ok beat Bama not long ago in the Sugar.

Doesn’t Oklahoma have the 4th highest payroll behind only bama auburn and Ohio state?

Exactly....the losses to SC and LSU were bad, but they've played very well on the big stage since. Winning championships is hard. Sabans success has messed up college fans expectations.

Not even close actually.
Oklahoma is way down there.

It's comparable to Ohio State if we're just talking assistants.
$4,485,000 (Ohio State)
$4,310,000 (Oklahoma)

In 2016, Urban made $6,000,000 while Stoops made $5,500,000.

Back in the early 2000’s they had a dominant defense. They have nothing close to that now or towards the end of Stoops tenure

The LSU loss was not bad. 21-14.
2004 USC and Clemson were bad. But those were great teams. That USC team was one of the all time greats and would’ve done the same thing to Auburn that year.

It’s interesting that USC and Auburn had a home and home in 2002 and 2003. I also think USC would have beaten Auburn if they played for the title that year.
