Watch Rush. Lauda bought his way onto the team then showed them how to improve the car to cut lap time dramatically. Then he got the seat.
What that man went through in that fiery crash and how he overcame the pain to come back so quickly is one of the most amazing stories I've ever heard of in motorsports.

The OP's post neglects that several drivers have stuck up for Mazepin when fans went after him.

That’s stupid because the drivers literally put their lives in each other’s hands every time they race... they should be the first ones to want to get unworthy drivers out of the sport

Yeah, think the point is that the fans think a lot less of him than the drivers. With the Perez stuff this weekend he apologized even before the FIA started investigating it.
Guy has done some shithead things, but so have many other drivers on the grid. I say this not in defense of him being a d-bag, just that the mob has their pitchfork and have chosen him to stalk.
Schumacher purposely wrecked into someone to win a championship and I don't think anyone felt he was unsafe. RoGro was part donkey doing things that put the whole field at risk, including catching a race ban, and he was a driver rep. Ocon decided to try whatever move on Verstappen in Brazil, and Ocon is very hated in the paddock, not sure anyone likes him.
