Why do you say that. He makes a ton of money but when you look at things like the popularity of soccer and even twitter follower (soccer 10 of the top 20). Kaka and Ronaldo are the most followed athletes on earth.
Have you been paying attention to my posts in this thread? I've said that 5 times at least..
I was strictly talking "brand" in that post. Which has more to do with endorsements than popularity. Popularity I've already said 100 times that Ronaldo is #1.

You kind of made it sound like only dumb fanboys like Ronaldo. Maybe I misinterpreted your post.

India would have a very large soccer following if they were any good at soccer.
They have a decent soccer following. Its like American football anything else in the country. It football and everything else is fighting for number 2. Even slightly popular with a billion people is big.

In Ronaldo vs. Messi, I would think that. I meant real fans of the sport because Messi is just better, and they don't care about the swagger shite.

Still, it really hurts that there isn't a drop of relevant soccer in the country. If India makes it to the World Cup, the worlds biggest sporting event would get a big ratings boost.

granted its better than saying someone buys more video games
you're talking about a name brand, right? what goes into that? video games, shoes/equipment, other endorsements.

twitter is not the best indicator of popularity.
He is the most popular athlete in the most popular sport in the world.
Over 2.2 billion people watched the 2010 World Cup final. Basketball just cannot compete with that.
I can throw out all kinds of statistics, but the fact of the matter is that soccer and Ronaldo are just too big for him to not be #1.

Yep
And nowadays, Twitter is a great indicator.

FWIW, Kaka has more Twitter followers than any other athlete in the world. Over 10 million.

Meh, there are a ton of people that appreciate what Ronaldo brings on the pitch. His movement off the ball seems to be as good as anyone in the world. His runs, cuts, and use of his pace and athleticism are brilliant. His footwork is truly excellent (and not just the fancy the fancy moves). There is a lot to appreciate about his game and not just that he can rip shots. I think Hispanics are bigger about Messi. I do not really think that makes up the fanbases one way or the other. Both Ronaldo and Messi have millions of great fans and morons (you know, like Rantards).
Messi doesn't have a twitter from what I hear but he had 7 million facebook followers by his first afternoon on the site. I do think over here I've seen a very Magic/Bird situation where they feed each other's popularity. It is a shame that more people in the US don't enjoy soccer.

would people please stop using twitter and facebook numbers as solid evidence. unless you think lil wayne and adam sandler are more popular than oprah.

the blacks and hispanics in the 14-29 range love the twitter. 13% of online adults use the service.

Yeeeeeeeeep, amount of followers doesn't measure someone's popularity whatsoever.

again, not arguing that basketball is more popular than soccer.
people do not have to watch basketball to know who lebron james is. The same way they didnt when Michael Jordan was playing.

Why do real fans not care about swagger? This seems totally arbitary.
You can love the players and the game on and off the pitch if you want.

Twitter and Facebook shouldn't be totally dismissed; they're not bad indicators. But you're right, they're not concrete evidence. That's why I posted the Google search result numbers as well to help supplement.

you realize how many kids are on twitter?
and how many adults are not?

granted its better than saying someone buys more video games, but considering the age range of its users its hard to say definitively those guys are more popular.
I still think saying the two most popular guys in the most popular sport in the world trumps most of that. Chad Ochocinco is a top 10 guy on twitter and he really isn't big outside of the US. My favorite sport is college football but i really love seeing the passion of the fans over here. I think if anyone went to a game, they'd be sucked in by the energy.
