I have no idea who the best Cricket player in southern Asia is.
cricket is not broadcasted globally like basketball.
you're not good at this.

Marle, stop being dense in this thread.
It is Cristiano Ronaldo.
You either love or hate him. Ronaldo is a polarizing figure. He has the second most Twitter followers in the world, only second to Real Madrid teammate, Kaka.
Cristiano Ronaldo is far more popular than Lebron in the WORLD. Not random regions, the world. Soccer is fricking huge in at least four continents. A decent amount of the world follows basketball, but not to the extent that they follow Ronaldo, Messi, Barcelona, and Manchester United.
Soccer is so much bigger than basketball around the world. The answer is clearly Cristiano Ronaldo. Any other answer would be shortsighted.

certainly more valid than some dope who says he talks to people while overseas.

But the likelihood of someone outside of this continent being more familiar with Ronaldo, Messi or Tiger is probably rather high.
there is nothing quantitative that supports that tiger woods being more popular than lebron james. nothing.
ronaldo and messi are undoubtedly more popular, however.

Yes it is, but his input is still great information. As was mine (I gave my input regarding popularity in a rural village in Africa). The sample size is much smaller, yes, but still good information.

Great points in all. It is true that he was wildly successful with 2 out of 3 most followed sports franchises in the world. Maybe I'm not as engrossed in the international culture. It seems as if while Ronaldo has a Lebron-type image that the media loves, Messi has a certain mystique about him. Real soccer fans probably favor Messi in popularity. Women, metros, and hero worshippers probably tip the scale in Ronaldo's favor though.
Twitter thing, as dumb as it sounds, is very indicative. There's certainly no comparative disadvantage in the idiot hero worshippers that comprise Lebron's fanbase.

i do agree that the soccer stars are more popular.

thank you for interviewing everyone in the universe for us. your contribution is much appreciated.
It isn't news... soccer dwarfs basketball. People are saying Lebron is a global brand and soccer isn't? Ronaldo and Messi are way bigger than Lebron. If you've gone anywhere then you don't really need to interview people to realize that soccer is so much more popular in the rest of the world that Lebron will never be on that level.

Tiger is 8th on Forbes "social" rank for athletes. Sharapova is ahead of him.

You're so off on this, it's sad. You cited fricking North America, which in your view, means the U.S. and Canada. You have your biases against soccer, and that's fine. But at least understand that you are ignorant about the sport.

Recently, a list was compiled of the top 50 most popular athletes when their name is searched on Google. The top five includes four soccer players (one retired) and a golfer. Below is the top five along with the amount of results found when they were Googled:
(#5) Tiger Woods: 59,100,000
(#4) David Beckham: 62,500,000
(#3) Pele: 72,400,000
(#2) Kaka: 80,200,000
(#1) Cristiano Ronaldo: 90,600,000
Other notable names in the top 10 included three notable NBA players: Kobe Bryant (#9), Michael Jordan (#8), and Lebron James (#6).

I absolutely agree with you about soccer, but are there any countries who weren't British colonies post 1900 that really have a lot of passion for cricket? Serious question. I feel like people vastly overestimate the popularity of cricket based on the fact that India has a population of over 1 billion.

Right, but you seem dumb enough to exclude India
Try finding something on TV in India other than cricket... I couldn't get the Super Bowl in India but you could get Cricket matches from 1982.

For the record Manny Pacquiao is also probable more popular than Lebron too.
