Yes. People in China and Russia give way more of a damn about basketball than they do fricking soccer. That's why Kobe and LeBron are bigger names. Sure that soccer shite dominates Western Europe and much of Latin/South America, but basketball has a big presence in all of those countries and in areas where soccer isn't as prevalent (Eastern Europe, Asia, and Pacific Oceania).

You sure about that?
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and it isn't close or debatable. Soccer is more popular around Asia than basketball, and Eastern Europe would take success in soccer over basketball any day.

You forgot Africa. (Soccer rules there.)
You're wrong about Asia and Eastern Europe.
I assure you hardly anyone in Bosnia knows who Lebron is, but they know Messi and CR7.
EDIT: Basketball is more popular than soccer in North America and parts of Asia. That's it. Basketball isn't bigger in Eastern Europe or the Middle East (another area you forgot). We basically can say the United States, Canada and (maybe) China like basketball more. That's about it.
In India, soccer isn't as popular as, say, cricket, but it's bigger than basketball.
I love basketball, but you guys must think that ESPN is the pulse of the entire sports world. You would be dead wrong.

Tiger is the closest American, but nowhere near Ronaldo. The 10,000,000 more people that follow Ronaldo say so.
Even more follow Kaka.
The biggest athletes in the most popular sports are going to be your biggest stars. Period.
You think the millions of kids all over Africa know who Tiger Woods or Lebron is? Nope. But they know Messi, Ronaldo, even Rooney and Iniesta. I know this for a fact.

In the 'fricking' 90's every Chinese airport had soccer 24/7. Yeah, I suppose the game has only shrunk in popularity since then.

no. tiger woods has been the most powerful athlete in the USA for nearly a decade and golf is not even close to being the most popular sport. hell, tiger was the most powerful person in all of sports a few years ago. more powerful than goodell and stern.

I don't think it's more popular in China, either. Pretty sure soccer is their most watched spectator sport.

Worldwide, if you are going to tell me that Tiger Woods was more popular and powerful than Beckham or Henry back then, you better back it up.
Golf is mostly followed by white people in English speaking countries. Not a great representative of the "whole world".

In America, sure. Around the world, soccer stars rule.

They seem to think that America, although a powerful player in the world of sports, is stronger than the rest of the world combined.
Posted on 8/27/12 at 2:52 pm to ohiovol
I'm not really sure why this is such a popular argument. Who cares?

Also don't seem to realize that things like jersey sales and endorsements greatly favor American athletes.

that post was an argument to the post that the biggest stars are the biggest stars in the biggest sports which is not true.

It really shouldn't be an argument at all. Worldwide, soccer is king. Globally, the World Cup is bigger than the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA finals, the Olympics, etc. I'm surprised people even bother contesting that at this point.

who contested this?

Cool, doesn't mean it's athletes are. You forget that basketball is probably the second most popular sport in the world as well. Soccer is the dominant sport in South America, but there are several NBA players in the Association from Brazil and Argentina. I don't care much for David Stern, but his work to make basketball a truly global game is admirable. Just compare where basketball was on a global level in 1992 to now. It's night and day. That's just in 20 years.

False. China and Russia care more about basketball than soccer. Hell in Russia, everything takes a backseat to hockey. India doesn't give a shite about either because cricket is the NFL of that nation. Japan is more of a baseball nation.

Depends on the nation, but I guarantee you that Lithuania and Croatia care more basketball than soccer.
Posted on 8/27/12 at 2:59 pm to ohiovol
I won't debate that.
My point is that popularity means very little, for me at least.

Major, major uninformed fail.

I doubt "millions of kids all over Africa" know who any professional athletes are. Most of Africa is still very much in the third world. Also, just because a sport is the most popular in a nation, doesn't mean that the big names in other sports are chopped liver that no one knows.
Nike is everywhere and their three biggest names are Kobe, LeBron, and Tiger. Not Ronaldo or Messi or any of these fly by night soccer queers.
