Is it surprising there are not more holes-in-one at PGA tournaments?

Watching early Canadian Open (there's nothing else on) and a guy just hit an ace. They ran a graphic that there have been 4 events so far this season with multiple holes-in-one (3 for 1 and 2 for the rest).

At first I thought that was pretty interesting but then I wondered whether there should be more? I now they are very rare, but you have the 40-50 best players playing the same holes for 4 days (yes, I know they will move the pin placements during).

Just a thought.

Not really surprising, no. Most pin placements are hard to go right at, especially the way they set up for pro tournaments.

Yeah it’s how the pins are placed relative to the players hitting from the championship tees or at least that’s my understanding.

Yes. Also, golf is hard for everyone. They minimize mistakes

Yeah I occasionally watch PGA Tour events to be reminded that I am far too bad at golf to ever enjoy it and that even the pros go out there and get humbled most weekends.

Internet says there around about 25 per season(regular season events).

Tiger and Jack had 3 each.

Most ever on tour is Miguel Angel Jimenez with 10.

That pin placement yesterday was set up for a hole in one look and it delivered. The ace on Thursday by Bezuidenhout was a much higher degree of difficulty

Putting a gold ball into a 4” hole from 120 yards away by swinging a club at it is hard

I am not a golfer (I have tried it and decided it was not for me), so excuse my ignorance if I ask any dumb questions

How many holes are truly within a one-stroke distance from the tee? I would think this begins to limit the opportunities.

How many of those that are potentially close enough have angles/obstructions that make a direct approach difficult or nearly impossible? This would seem to further limit potential hole-in-ones.

I would also think that getting the ball within 5-10 feet of the cup would be considered a great tee shot, so getting it in the cup from the tee would almost always require a bit of luck. Still, I would think better golfers have a better chance and would be statistically more likely to have hit a hole in one. I wonder if the statistics would find that to be true?

Not many 120 yard par 3s on tour. Add about 80 yards.

If the par 3's were 150 yards or less, there would be a bunch of aces because the pros would be flag hunting.

When you're hitting mid irons into tour greens from 200+ yds, you're really just trying to hit to a particular portion of the green.
