Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
When the Browns relocated to Baltimore, the hate followed.

Only because Baltimore and Pittsburgh have been the two best teams in that division for awhile and have played four playoff games against each other. If either of the falls off, it becomes just another game like New England/Indianapolis did when Peyton left.

This plus very few seasons have been ruined by losing to the other.
Michigan ruined perfect OSU seasons in 93, 95 and 96...OSU could easily have 3 more national titles except for those turds
I'm sure all the other good rivalries have those types of things too

My argument against Duke/UNC is that they play 2-3 times a year every year. You have more than 1 opportunity to win that game than you do in football
I generally agree with this, and it's why I don't think NYY/Boston even compares to a lot of others mentioned in this thread.

I guess it's possible they could play 4 times in 1 year
All of this and Duke has small undergrad student body (6000ish) of mostly out of staters. Not a big following except for those that just don't like UNC (called ABCers here). Live here and it is just not the bitter rivalry talked up everyday at the water cooler like other big rivalries.
And, grats on the championship.

I say all this, and I never miss a Duke/UNC game. It is special but it isn't a be all end all like Bama/Auburn OSU/Michigan seem to be almost annually

So the only rivalries that could possibly matter are college football rivalries?

The "best" one is subjective. Whichever is the hottest rivalry between two championship-level teams is the best one at that time.
The 2000s began with Yankees/Red Sox. Then it was Michigan/Ohio State. Then it was UNC/Duke. Now UNC is a little down, so it's been replaced by Auburn/Alabama

Here's the difference, and I respect your opinion, those are big city teams with national following and two of the most recognizable trademarks anywhere. They are usually contenders (Duke and UNC are too)and have the love/hate factor that comes with being good. But it is different than football, no doubt.

Top 10 probably
Probably ??

I think the three best rivalries are all college football rivalries. Alabama/Auburn, Michigan/OSU and Navy/Army (for entirely different reasons).

Chargers/ Raiders is the best rivalry

What's hurt it is college basketball has withered in popularity in the last 20 years.
Duke/UNC used to be bigger. May still be Top 10 in importance, but kinda doubt it.

Read a comment once that pretty much sums this up. The Ohioan said essentially that the diffence in pro and college is that if the Browns lose he is over it by Monday but if the Buckeyes lose it takes all week to get over it. I agree.

I think the best rivalries are those that mean so much every single time. If Duke drops the game tonight, it may not change one thing for them.
So yea, to me the best rivalries are 1 time a year, or only those that occur for a title of some sort....I could see all the tennis ones being right up there to me too

Duke-UNC is arguably the best along with the likes of Yankees-Red Sox, Ohio State-Michigan, etc. However, it's hard to argue against Duke-UNC being the closest contested rivalry in history.

If Duke loses, I have to shut my phone off for the next week to avoid assholes. That means a lot to me.

Could drop them to a two seed (minimal, I know).

And I'm not trying to slight it and think it is far and away the best in the sport. It's just UNC losing 3 weeks ago or whatever wasn't that big of a deal to the national perspective of the teams. If UNC wins tonight, it helps them but is still kind of blah nationally as a "story."
I will be watching tonight for sure
