My favorite Gibson story:
In his final outing in the MLB, Gibson gave up a grand slam to Pete LaCock. 15 years later, Gibson threw at and hit LaCock in an old-timers game. All Gibson would say was “the books must be balanced.”

That's one of the most Bob Gibson stories ever.

Wasn't his ERA in the high 1's that year?
1.12 and he had 9 losses (22-9)

Don’t stare at him, don’t smile at him, don’t talk to him. He doesn’t like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don’t run too slow, don’t run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don’t charge the mound, because he’s a Gold Glove boxer.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, what about my 17-game hitting streak?’ That was the night it ended.” —Dusty Baker
That’s freakin awesome.

Gibson's record in 1968 was 22-9. He had losses where his team scored 1, 2, 0, 0, 1, 2, 2, 0. Record could have been much better.
He had an 11 game stretch where he went 9 innings in every game with 8 shutouts and only 1 run allowed in each of the other 3.
He had games where he pitched 12 innings, 11 innings twice, and 10 innings once.
Truly incredible.
I don't know the details behind game 7 but one wonders if they win that game if he allows himself to get taken out after 6. Of course, that's incredible hindsight and the coach would have been murdered in the streets if he takes out Gibson and the RP gives up the runs to lose it.

Probably not. Mickey Lolich threw a complete game and St. Louis didn't score until they hit a solo HR with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.
Worth noting that Lolich did that on 2 days rest while Gibson was on 3 days rest. Incredible that guys used to do that regularly.

Not a lot of run support?

Didn't they do a 4 man rotation until the 80's or so? Why some guys routinely had high 30, some low 40 GS's.

In Game 7 of the 1967 World Series Gibson pitched a complete game shutout and hit a homerun as the Cardinals beat the Red Sox 3-0.

And starting pitchers with a 100 pitch count are continuously blowing out their arms. The entire rotation for the Braves are pretty much out for the season.

That sucks but you have to keep in mind it was a dead ball season.
2nd lowest Runs/Game leaguewide behind 1908
When the average game has 3.42 runs if you give up 2 you have a good chance of losing.
