Says who? There's no one even close to Jordan right now. There's no one close to Gretzky right now.
Jordan neither leads the NBA in championships or in any major stat, so how is he such a crystal clear GOAT? I agree with the other guy; Bill Russell or Magic Johnson, maybe Kareem are compelling cases. I think Jordan is overrated as a sports figure. I'm not saying he isn't the GOAT basketball player, but the fact that ESPN named him the athlete of the last century was an abomination and nothing less

Any argument made for Bill Russell ignores the fact that he dominated a league of 8 teams made up primarily of 6-3/6-6 white guys, same with Kareem to a lesser extent.
ETA: Jordan has Magic beat in every important category except assists.

Wilt Chamberlain was in that league, too
Here are some players that were in the league at the same time as Russell.
Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Hal Greer, Rick Barry, Jerry Lucas (and thats not including the Sam Jones, John Havlicek, Bob Cousy) that he played with

Jordan however has a better chance of being surpassed as GoAT in bball.
Won't be anytime soon. No one in the current NBA has GOAT potential and I don't see any college players right now that have it either.

Kareem? So the 70's and 80's consisted of 8 teams and 6'5'' white guys? That's news to everyone here

Other than Wilt, not a single person you listed refutes my premise. And since I said primarily, Wilt doesn't either. Russell was a great player no doubt, but I think anyone who played before the merger has a little asterisk next to their ranking

I said lesser extent bc i was referring to the early 70's. And by the time the 80's rolled around he had Magic

The tallest player besides BRuss was 6'5.

Hmm last time I checked Chamberlain was 7'2''

This doesn't make your original statement any less idiotic. The 70's were extremely competitive and, I hate to break it to you, consisted of many tall, athletic players of both black and white ethnicity. And then you just conveniently try and dismiss the entire decade of the 80's by saying, "Oh he had Magic, so that doesn't count either."

Bill Russell
5x MVP
11x NBA champion
2x NCAA champion (arguable more impressive than the first 2)
Kareem Abdul Jabar
6x MVP
All time leading scorer
6x NBA champion
3x NCAA champion

Please list all these players in the early 70's who were 6'9 + and athletic. I'm not dismissing the 80's im only saying that he wasn't the best player on alot of those lakers teams which would count against him as far as GOAT is concerned. Also, almost all experts agree that the league didn't it it's modern level of athleticism until at least the merger. Kareem a still top 5 player all time but there are reasons no one really considers him the GOAT. Do ya'll really think that if Shaq would've played when Russell and Kareem did he wouldn't have put up similar numbers?

Oh so only the early 70's don't count? What about the second half of the decade? Was Kareem playing against Paul Arizin and Lennie Rosenbluth then too?

Semmy Schilt been mentioned yet? The greatest kick boxer of all time and its by a pretty decent margin.

I've mentioned the Merger already try and pay attention. The Merger happened in 1976, anything that happened before then obviously counts, but has a small asterisk next to it. Three of Kareem's MVP's and one of his only two Finals Mvp's happened before the Merger. He's still a great great great player but that does factor in

I beat the shite out of Semmy at a party one time. He was drunk as shite and tried to kick me while he was standing on gravel. He slipped and I pounced. He later tried to find me when he was sober.
