Would teams score 50% less points in the NFL?

Hypothetical of course but I’m curious what you guys think. Would scoring be cut in half as a result?

To what degree would it change scoring?

No because of the refs. It Probably gives them more reason to penalize the defense.

I think if you want less points you could make it 15 yards to get a 1st down. But that would make the job of displaying the yellow line a living hell.

If you want to slow down offenses, you remove the RPO by enforcing OL being downfield.

If the 12th was a Cowboys linebacker it wouldn't matter.

I’m sure it’s somewhat automated. Just make it 20 with 5 downs to do it.

No worse than the DH in baseball.

if football had an all time qb who would be all time QB, JP Losman or Zach Mettenberger?

I would imagine most teams would use the extra defender almost exclusively as a pass rusher which would put more defenders in the box and could potentially create even more pass heavy offenses.

Not necessarily increasing scoring but skewing the game even further in the pass heavy direction

the better question is how many yards per carry would derrick Henry average if the defense had 12 men

At first I thought no.

But if defenses went all Greg Williams and played 0 coverage every single snap, they would be able to send an untouched player at the QB every single dropback.

I don't see how that offense would really be able to do much of anything if a defense did that. Plus the QB would get hit every single dropback, and hit hard.

The CFL has 12 players on offense and defense.

Much larger field though so hard to make a direct comparison.

Or are you talking offense gets 11 and defense gets 12?

Offenses are getting better for a lot of reasons.

#1 they a literally getting better. Better and more accurate QBs, receivers that make insane catches and are incredible athletes. Coaches that find every weakness possible, etc.

#2 defenses are getting shittier. The DEs don’t contain. No one knows how to tackle or take a proper angle. It’s awful to watch.

#3 Holding by WRs and the o-line is out of control. And has been for many years.

Unless coaches want to focus on #2 and force the higher ups to enforce #3, the scoring machine teams aren’t going anywhere.

Offensive schemes today are light years ahead of where they were 20 years ago. Back then, the league had guys like Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, and (a few years later) Vince Young playing I formation football and not even coming close to maximizing their talents.

Michael Vick should have never played a single snap under center unless it was near the goal line.

I actually like the question.

Pretty tired of seeing 72-58 games.
