It doesn't help the football program, when their head coach literally alienates the whole South part of State, and the nearest Major City, that has talent(st.Louis/eastl).

When Lovie came in, he refused to do coaches shows on the southern cities and on st.louis radio. Which is what every Illini coach has always done, to keep the boosters and keep program relevant in the area.

What did he do after realizing he f'd up, some shite billboards in st.louis/east st.louis area, and finally some coaches shows scheduled for next season.

Lovie is clueless when it comes to CFB, it was a horrendous hire.

Illinois consistently being a joke is one of the most inexplicable things in sports. Illinois is a huge state and Chicago is a massive city and they don’t have to split their state with two or three other major programs as is the case in most larger states. I could understand if their football program was just ok but it’s completely inexcusable that their basketball program isn’t a perennial powerhouse.

Champaign Urbana is in the middle of nowhere. Totally boring.

Do kids in Illinois grow up dreaming of being Illini?

Somehow I don't think the passion is there.

I think Underwood is a really good coach so he should be able to turn them around. But yeah...surprising they are that bad under him right now.

They'll have a good chance of beating Wisconsin in Madison. The Badgers were a bubble/NIT team with D'Mitrik Trice and Kobe King. They're an utter disaster without these two.

There have been multiple instances, over the last few games, that Greg Gard has played three walk-ons at the same time for extended minutes.

Hell, STL isn't far, same for Indy as well. Their hoops teams have had some great units under Self/Weber back in the day.

UNC

Not nearly the same as Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois etc. They compete for in-state talent with 3 other ACC schools and another 3 FBS schools. North Carolina is also in the southeast so the state gets poached by Clemson and the SEC. It's very difficult to get in-state talent in NC. Not saying it's easy in Maryland, NJ, and Illinois...but it's not as competitive as what UNC deals with.

With that being said, I think UNC has underachieved in the past based on the talent on the roster, and I believe they'll be pretty good again in football in 2019.

They did play the game, Lovie hired HS coach from St.Louis, and he has a shite load of talent on the roster. (trinity HS)

and is very well known/liked in area

But it also sounds like HS coaches in STL are loving the new OL coach Missouri hired. So should be interesting battles for trinity and Lutheran north kids.

I don't buy that, and I am partial to Carolina.

Maryland and New Jersey have been poached forever by Penn State, Notre Dame, Michigan, OSU, etc. Penn State and Notre Dame, in particular, have lived off those two states since forever; our best NFL prospect (and the guy that I think is the single best football player in this draft) is from Jersey. That's not a new phenomenon. The Southern schools also came on in Jersey a big way about when Urban Meyer was at Florida and have mined ever since (like Fitzpatrick to Alabama).

I don't see it as materially different than what UNC has going, particularly since Carolina has been in a top tier conference for its entire existence and has had the name recognition benefit, academics, and money that Rutgers, UofI, and Maryland haven't necessarily had.

There’s only so many athletes to go around in football. It’s hard for so many schools to just be good based on location.

Part of me suggests UNC should be good because of the brand and location, but the area is poached heavily by SEC schools, Clemson, etc. Football players also know that they are second fiddle to hoops.

I don’t think that’s how it is at Maryland anymore. Turgeon is okay, but the Terps haven’t been anything spectacular under him. 1 appearance in the Sweet 16 with him, and only 2 total since the 2002 Natty.

Oh well, Illinois sucks in major sports.
