Why is everyone thinking this is an assault on his draft prospects or his character?

A) I already said he’s a great guy

B) heisman has nothing to do with NFL, why should that ever matter?

All I’m saying is compared to the past 19 years of winners going back to Troy Smith, his stats and every other finalist this year were lagging big time. And there was no iconic moment from any of them.

I for one never thought yours was an assault on his draft prospects. But I must take issue with the statement that Heisman has nothing to do with the NFL. While it’s true that a successful Heisman campaign doesn’t necessarily have any bearing on future NFL play, I’m certain it plays a notable role in one’s draft stock.

Offensive numbers as whole at both the CFB and NFL level have come back down since the offensive explosion from around 2010-20.

For example, only 2 teams this year have 500+ ypg. It used to be around a dozen. Used to be 30-35 teams avg 35+ ppg. Now it’s 13 teams. Defenses have adjusted but the running clock rule has impacted it too. Maybe even NIL/transfer portal to some extent with lack of player development but obviously impacts both sides of the team

Look if you didn’t watch college football this season you could have just said that at the beginning of your OP and saved us all the trouble.

I was coming to add factors beyond just defenses catching up but I think you pretty well covered it.

Defense adapting
Clock rules
Transfers, particularly on offense not meshing exactly

Mendoza is a terrible Heisman winner

I think this is a bit harsh. You win the Heisman for the season you play in, not the seasons of yesteryear. Is he a "weak" winner in comparison to many of the players who won the trophy before him? I think so. But he was among the best players in college football THIS year. You can argue all you want about the nature of individual performances this year but I don't think it fair to call him a terrible winner just because they don't stack up to past individual performances.

No one was particularly freakish stat wise this year. Love won his run award and played garbage competition. Didn’t put up multiple scores against any D ranked better than 50th.

The Bilitnikoff winner put up a paltry 1200 yards receiving.

The age of the NIL will depress stats I think.

It’s the sped up clock so that the networks could adjust the commercials to game time ratio for the same broadcast windows to their favor. We’re losing 10-15 plays every game now.

This was one of the weakest Heisman finalist groups in recent memory. Mendoza had similar stats this season (3220 total yards 39 TDs) to Jalen Milroe in 2023 (3570 total yards 36 TDs). Milroe finished 6th in Heisman voting that year.
