Probably because the national media like seeing "lesser" programs such as Ole Miss succeed every once in a while. It makes things interesting and is a change of pace from the monotony of more traditional programs remaining on top all the time.

If your standard is he has to have won the NC then you have 3 options among active coaches, Day, Smart and Dabo, none of which are leaving their current jobs. So do you not hire anyone?
Even if it’s a conference title the options are extremely limited. Name the available coach that’s “won anything” Saban never won anything before coming to LSU, neither did Miles. Who is the Magic coach that you want?

Yes, ESPN hates LSU so much, that 3 of their biggest football analysts and personalities are former players in Ryan Clark, Marcus Spears, and Bouger. Hell, they hate us so much that they even promoted Booger to ABC.
They hate us so much that they didn’t even hire an LSU graduate, but a huge lifeline LSU fan and super homer to be their full time SEC Network host in Peter Burns. The same network hates LSU so much that they’ve also made 3 of their top in studio college baseball analysts in Jared Mitchell, Todd Walker, and Ben McDonald. They hate LSU so much they even make the last 2 call games during the season. They hate us so much they actually make Ben call the fricking College World Series. ON ESPN!!!! So much fricking hate!!! REEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

I want Lane to stay because he can become a legend at Ole Miss if he brings them a national title. At LSU he is just another coach.
