If they said something and it wasn't true, they'd be in deep shite.

money machine that has become college sports.

Only like 20 athletic programs in the entire nation make money.

This really is a separate topic--making money and loooking the other was from sexual abuse of children aren't inevitably connected.

That said, an athletic program doesn't have to "make money" (i.e., turn a profit) for money to be very important. If a program grosses enough to pay coaches handsomely (and I'm not even talking about Saban/Miles/Meyer kinds of salaries), support non-revenue sports, entertain boosters, provide scholarships, even if the "bottom line" is a loss, the money is significant.

This is dumb, but for argument's sake, you're a coach at Nebraska. And someone tells you a retired PS coach molested a child back in 2002. The person that told you doesn't have any evidence and isn't willing to go to the cops. What would you do about it?

Yea, the only thing that you might be able to do in this instance is leak it out to the media. But even that probably wouldn't go that far, unless deadspin gets a hold of it.

yes...I am pretty sure that Sandusky was busted on a wrestling mat...a little boy was on top of him and Sandusky had his eyes closed.

Since I suffer from being an attorney, I'd probably press the person who told me on where he/she got the information. If the person was an eyewitness (which is contrary to your assumption), I'd try to convince him/her to go to the cops. If not, I would (unless the communication was somehow privileged). If it is hearsay (i.e., the person tells me he heard someone else say that something happened), it becomes harder to decide to take action. If the person says, "X told me he saw this happen," I guess I would want to know what X really said before I brought the cops down on the alleged perp with so little credible evidence.

Just read that interview with mom of victime #1. INcredible this Fing scumbag. He was volutneering as a high school coach to get access to more young kids and they let this creep take this boy out of school away from campus whenever he wanted without raising any flags. I tell you what, that family should OWN that high school and everyone in it. That wrestling coach ranks right up there with McQueary and Paterno as far as I'm concerned if he saw this and did nothing

Just for the sake of argument, let's say you give Sandusky a pass on the 1998 claim, it's still in the back of your mind though. Now, fast forward to 2002, and you hear about him raping a child on campus, is there any logical reason why you wouldn't then go to the police?

The answer to your question is "no". But I'm not sure that deciding not to go to the police the first time around based on a "He said that she said that someone else heard that...." kind of rumor is really "giving him a pass."

There was also a janitor who saw stuff going on and did nothing...apparently the culture of covering stuff up over there runs from the bottom to the top.

As I posted in another thread, I'm getting curious as to the pressure that was brought to bear on McQueary to keep quiet after he went to the PSU authorities. Imagine the position some janitor must have been in if all the PSU bigwigs were telling him to sit on it. He's now suffering from dementia, apparently, so we'll never know.

Yeah, most likely this was a well guarded secret. I am not buying the idea that college coaches were talking about this behind Sandusky's back. Some may have suspected but I imagine the principals in this story kept this a closely guarded secret.

Think about it, you know someone who shows up with a "girlfriend" for the Bowl game, what are you thinking, honestly.

So now you have a guy who repeatedly shows up with different "younger friends" he is just helping out. Maybe the first time or second time you believe this but at some point you flat stop.

He did, he told the school admins who talked to the boy, then told all the parents Sandusky had associations with. Barred Sandusky from school grounds and contacted the REAL police.

This is how the victims mother got confirmation Sandusky was hurting her child and blew open this whole mess.

The damage won't stop at Penn State, at least in terms of negative perception. I asked the other day whether this might bring down the money machine that has become college sports. Not many people wanted to take a swing at the question, but I still think it's a possibility.

If you're going to open up the can of worms and say this was a systematic conspiracy to protect the bread winner (the money making football machine) for the corporation (which colleges are now) then you can't keep your fingers only pointed at Penn State.

If people don't let this go at a sicko molester then the media are going to question the culture and organizational systems of how insular universities operate in small towns where coaches are Gods (they already have in some articles)...you could see this at so many other places happening...Alabama, Ohio State (remember the AD/President joking that Tressel might fire him and not the other way around) and if anything, and only if all this speculation is true...it reveals why trivial stuff like NCAA violations go unreported 97% of the time. If you get in trouble, you really were spied on and someone outside of your Cabal reported it. Inside the power programs with big time head coaches, there is still probably little objective outside oversight. So much money involved and the football coach is the the CEO of everyone's potential Enron. Everyone is trying to protect their corporate brand 24/7.
