“If I don’t try I don’t lose” attitude of BI and Zion is the same with HS athletes

I see it all the time in middle and high school. Kids today see a good team and immediately shut down in their mind. As soon as something goes wrong they just give up. Basically they convince themselves that if they didn’t fully try they didn’t actually lose.

This is unfortunately the same mentality that the Pelicans best players Zion and BI have. As soon as things look tough they are looking for a way out. BI does it on purpose, he actively avoids pressure. Zion doesn’t actively avoid it, he plays incredibly hard when he’s in the game. This is almost more frustrating because his mind looks for excuses, he might not even realize it’s happening. As soon as he has some sort of reason to be out, he’s out and has his excuses ready.

Now he can convince himself that the Pelicans would’ve won if he stayed on the floor. Where as if he had stayed and we lost, he wouldn’t have an excuse.

It’s a shitty mentality, there’s nothing wrong with playing your best and losing, but guys today just look for excuses to take blame off of themselves because they can’t handle the idea of defeat.

I don’t think he quit. I think he hurt something and his mind convinced his body he had to come out.

Some guys get hurt and their reaction is, “how can I play through it to stay in the game”, some guys get hurt and their reaction is “I gotta come out because I don’t want to be hurt”.

Unfortunately Zions is the latter.

Hopefully I’m wrong here, I actually hope he’s seriously injured because then it wouldn’t make me think he’s as soft as I currently do.

Well he’s 100% right.

He better have a serious injury b/c if not this is a really bad look for him.

How do you know what someone's thinking? That's some bizarre shite, almost mental.

Like I said, I actually hope he has some kind of real injury and I’m wrong.

But it’s not like he’s never done something like this before. Just a week ago he sat out a must win game with a bruised finger and we lost to the Spurs.

I don’t know exactly what he’s thinking, I know the mentality. I’ve seen it in so many young athletes and done my best to try and teach them to think differently, with varying success

I also ignored the fact that he didn't realize BI was benched by the coach because he was hurt to end the season and we were in a must win game and needed our best defenders out there

I hear you bruh.

I definitely wouldn't lay this one on Zion. I know he's got some shite to work through but he'll handle that due to maturity. I still think he's a sold guy.

That’s exactly my point. BI shuts down in big games because he actively avoids pressure.

Apparently you actively avoided reading comprehension assignments growing up.

If you can't understand that it takes a player to get back in game shape after missing time with an injury and the playoffs isn't really a good time to try to work a guy back in, that's not my problem.

Not being at your peak doesn't mean you "shut down". It's just part of sports and injuries.

You seem to be one of those people who think you can just will your way to a great performance. That just isn't how sports work.

he was fine scoring 38, but as soon as that 40th pt went down and pels had all the momentum he felt a cramp in his pinky toe and quit so that he wouldn't have a chance to lose
