Laettner v. Shaq, 1991 and 1992:
19.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.1 BPG
21.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 2.0 APG, 2.1 BPG
v.
27.6 PPG, 14.7 RPG, 1.6 APG, 5.0 BPG
24.1 PPG, 14.0 RPG, 1.o APG, 5.2 BPG
Yeah, Shaq was better. Laettner stole Shaq's spot on the Dream Team, and everyone outside of Duke apologists knew it at the time.

Maybe so. But he is just as much of a jerk as Laettner is/was. He just never won shite to back it up.

The Fab 5 victim complex is hilarious. Those guys jawed and jawed. No techs in the championship game (which is fine with me, but don't act like you're fricking victim). Was anyone ejected for throwing a ball at Laettner's face during a free throw (which would happen in a millisecond in today's game)? No.

Only in Baton Rouge. Not nationally.

So the big question is what the frick happened to him in the NBA?

Most people think he's bust. I'm not sure where that notion came from. Was he a hall of famer or constant all star? No
But he had an average career for 13 years

He came in and averaged 18/9/3 as a rookie.
ETA: Better NBA career than everyone but Webber on the Fab 5.

This. I loved Webber and Michigan but Rose is leading this stupidity. Like I said, ESPN can do better.

He was solid but never great. I think his inability to win with the Twolves did a number on his passion for the game though.

1) went to the timberwolves
2) had an achilles injury
3) his attitude sucked
he was still a solid pro but obviously ended up a journeyman instead of a star in the back 2/3rds of his career

Their most important employee loves him so we're stuck with him saying the same 3 talking points over and over.

Laettner def deserved that spot over Shaq. Not even a fricking debate. He owned Shaw in college.

That ain't saying much considering how he has fared since his time in Atl.

But Laettner was the obviously better college player. People forget he went heads up against the Shaqs and Larry Johnsons and often out played them.
But he didn't outplay Shaq. Duke outplayed LSU. Here's the NYT game story from 1992:

Check out the lede:

It's becoming the story of Shaquille O'Neal's collegiate career that he will win most of the individual battles while L.S.U.'s stronger opponents will win most of the wars.
This afternoon, the 7-foot-1-inch L.S.U. center came out ahead in his individual duel with Christian Laettner, outscoring the Duke center by 25-22.
And more...
quote:
Everyone concedes that much. Which is why O'Neal was surrounded by two, sometimes three and on at least one occasion four Duke defenders, every time he touched the ball. He scored anyway.
Had his teammates been able to keep Duke honest with outside shooting, O'Neal might have been able to score 100 points. If he had a well-developed 10-foot jumper he might have scored 50. But his teammates didn't and O'Neal doesn't so Duke collapsed and swarmed its way to a victory.
Duke's #2 guy was Grant Hill in that game. LSU's was Clarence Ceasar. That pretty much sums things up.

No need to cry when the draft had it right.

I'm not crying about it. You are the one whining the most

Would you like me to link you to a news story from 1991 when Duke played LSU and Laettner did outplay Shaq in every statistical category?
