hockey fans always laugh me out the place when i ask this, but i never get a good answer.

a hockey goal is 6'x4', right?

why not put pads on a 6"+, 500lb sumo kind of guy? toss in a stick and how much space could there really be to shoot? why would this not work?

I think the same reason they don't have midgets hitting. It kaes a mockery of the game. Besides, there will be uncovered net, and the snipers will find it. Sumo wrestlers won't cover the entire goal.

Exactly. I would think rebound shots would be a bit easier against a tub-o-lard, too.

how much uncovered net could there really be against this guy, add pads and stick, plus assume he can at least flare out his elbows/arms?

he wouldn't last being fat that long.

i read somewhere that goalies lose over 5 pounds a game wearing all those pads and sweating so much.

There was a story on ESPN a few years back about goalies ironing out their pads to make them wider. I know they have regs on the size of the pads and stick.

Maybe fat people don't want to sit in front of the goal and get pelted with hockey pucks?

He would cover a lot, but there'd be at least a few tiny areas of space that NHL shooters could find.

There is no way a guy that fat could even do that.

he's holding his arms out wide in that photo, i don't think a flair is out of the question.

i just don't know. I mean here is a skills challenge video. All-star caliber guys with no defense and they still don't hit the targets every time.

Maybe the sea lion in pads could manage to slightly lean one or they way other to create an even tougher shot.

I think keeping their balance on skates would be a huge problem

oh, these bastards aren't pulling a triple lutz on the ice. they are sitting/laying/waddling on their fat arse. the skates just keep their feet warm.

seriously - it's because agility is more important than size. Your skates increase your height by 2-3 inches, the puck is less than 1 inch.

A 500 lb bama fan wouldn't be able to get down quickly enough - shooting low is the easiest, and so you would literally score all day on a guy w that body type

True story.

I played in a roller hockey league in college where the first-place team in the league did this. Huge tub of lard in front of the net. My team beat them in the finals.

Our strategy was to bring all of our players away from the net, shoot from just inside the blue line, then smash in the rebounds. Worked beautifully. We beat them in the championship and they lost their first game. 11-2F.

No, we had not played that team all year either.

I think this is the best point made so far. No person who could support their own body could possibly take up the entire goal. There will always empty spaces. And it doesn't exactly take a pro to shoot accurately enough to hit those spaces.

I am guessing that if this were to happen, the snipers in the NHL would be going for the 5 hole every time. A guy that fat isn't near quick enough to react to close quarters around the net. Could you imagine how many break away and rebound goals he would give up.

Goalies in the NHL today are also expected to be able to play the puck in order to beat the forecheck (Marty Turco), I'm not positive that this guy could skate out of his net and the play the puck up the ice
