I’d love to see 20 Bama play 21 UGA.

Their defense is not nearly as good as the 21 Georgia defense and will Howard is mediocre compared to other big time college qbs

21 Bama beat 21 UGA and probably would have beat them twice if Metchie and Jameson Williams didn't go down with knee injuries.

2024 OSU

When they are clicking their offense can't be stopped, and they have the number 1 defense in the country.
Checkmate

Lets compare; first rounders in bold

QB- Mac Jones vs Will Howard- Jones was far superior that season

RB- Najee Harris and Brian Robinson vs Treyveon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins- push at best, but Harris was the best college back of the 4.

WR- Devonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, John Metchie vs Jeremiah Smith, Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate. Advantage Alabama. Smith is a freak, but he really didn't sniff Devonta Smith's production

OL- we'll call it a push here, both solid units

Defense I would give the edge to Ohio State- but Alabama had gamechangers at every level. Will Anderson is one of the best edge defenders in the NFL, Christian Barmore is one if the top paid defensive tackles in the league, Pat Surtain is the best corner in the league. Jordan Battle was a third round selection at safety, Christian Harris a 3rd round selection at ILB.

Overall Ohio State had a better defense, but nobody slowed that Alabama offense down, including a Georgia team that had 6-7 eventual first round picks in their defensive 2 deep. Bama's lowest point total in 13 games was 31 against Notre Dame in the semis when the dogs were called off late.

No team in the OP's list had a prayer of stopping that offense, so they would've needed to beat them in a shootout, and I don't see any there capable

OSU won 3/4 of their playoff games by halftime. They had put up 34 on Oregon who was a top 20 defense within the first 25 minutes of gametime. They dismantled top defenses the entire playoff with ease.

OSU in the playoffs, not before, could have gotten into and potentially won a track meet with anyone. The OP said at their best, so I would submit the 2025 Rose Bowl which is as good a first half of football by one team against another top 5 team potentially ever. 2019 LSU/OU is certainly on that list as well.

Jeremiah Smith was a big part of that game. At his best I'm not sure he's cooking a junior Pat Surtain who's also at his best.

I mean that OSU team had Fields at QB and Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Jackson Smith Njigba, and Jameson Williams at WR and they couldn't do anything through the air on that Bama secondary

Not sure why so many of you have OSU over last years Michigan team. That team matches up really well with this OSU squad. The one team that gave them fits was Texas, because Texas has a good Dline. Michigan's Dline was far superior. OSUs Oline, which lost two studs to injuries, would struggle with that unit. There weren't many great teams this year so I think they got away with a thin Oline group. JMHO.

Not sure how I would rank them except for 2020 Bama at 1.

I think people are sleeping on the 2023 Michigan squad. OL play was very down across CFB this year and they would have ran for about a billion yards on everyone.

Umm, Texas and Michigan showed that your offense wasn’t unstoppable

2019 LSU offense was a offense that was unstoppable at the end of the year

Lost Sermon on literally the first offensive snap so they had no ground game.

Again it's just a fun hypothetical. that 2020 OSU team who Bama played was missing multiple starters on defense due to Covid so it made Bama's incredible offense look even better. OSU wasn't winning that game without a couple of turnovers at the least.

I think this 2024 team when it finally played up to its potential could do damage to anyone. The DL crushed Oregon and Texas who have NFL tackles (Texas having 2 potential first rounders), so they may have been able to get after Jones a good bit and stop the run. Hard to predict where the players from OSU go in the draft this year and beyond too

Fields was also injured in the Clemson game and was nowhere near 100% against Alabama.

That said, if your defensive scheme is to put Tuf Borland on Devonta Smith you aren't ever winning that game.

Nebraska held Ohio State to 21 points and 287 yards. Penn State 20 and 358. Michigan 10 and 234. Texas 14 and 295 if you take away the stupid screen blitz. Their offense was shut down in 1/4 of their games. They're not beating 2021 or 2022 Georgia or 2020 Bama. They lost to 2024 Michigan, so why the hell would you think they'd beat 2023 Michigan when the same defense gave up 30 to them last year? The 2023 Ohio State defense was statistically better than the 2024 version...

Because the thread title says:

quote:

How would you rank these teams when playing their A+ game

And people think OSU 2024 beat Michigan 2023.

OSU 2023 defense was not as good as the 2024 team. 2023 didn't play a team like Oregon @Oregon or teams like Texas and Notre Dame (2024 version).

2024 OSU defense was literally 8 starters back, Sonny Styles moved to LB from Safety, Simon being a full time starter and not a co-starter...and adding Caleb Downs
