Neither did Cy Young.
And lack of that award doesn’t change the fact he’s the best damn pitcher to ever take the bump.
ETA: take a look at the Cy Young winners over the course of mlb history… yea there are some big names, and some absolutely forgotten nobody’s. I’m not big on awards from sportswriters in general. They’re just a tier above food critics.

I remember when he was with the Angels he was clicked at 108 mph. 108!!! They asked his catcher what it was like. Without a word he removed his hand from his mitt and was wearing one of those car washing sponges inside the mitt. Said he changed for a new one every three innings! Holy shite.
He was wild in his early years and never was on many great teams. I think that hurt his Cy Young votes.
I’d still go with Walter Johnson and maybe even Bob Gibson or Koufax, but as a career, he stands alone. A no hitter at 44 is otherworldly.

34 is obviously my number and it’s because of Nolan. He didn’t have the awards or WS accomplishments but was still dominant without all of that. No one touches his legend status in my book

Bob Gibson or Koufax,
Nolan would probably say these two were the best.

Huge Nolan Ryan fan!! Still have the newspaper framed when he threw his 7th no hitter.
My buddies are Braves fans and we still get into the argument of who was better, Ryan or Maddux. They always throw the Cy Young’s in my face. God I hate the Braves!

Nolan was the most entertaining pitcher who ever lived and is a legitimate first-ballot Hall of Famer but he's not anywhere close to the GOAT. If I could choose any pitcher from history to throw a mythical seventh game of a World Series for me, he'd be at the bottom of the list because he'd be just as liable to walk the park as he would be to throw a no-hitter.
But he had an amazing career, we will never see his likes again. He was maybe the toughest individual who ever pitched plus for a quarter century he did it his way and never, ever, EVER gave into a hitter, which IMO along with they get off on demon speed is why fans gravitate to him.
Mets fans are still fussing 50 years later about them trading him, but here's a historical trivia fact: Ryan was the Angels' second choice in that trade. They wanted Gary Gentry, who at that point in time was considered a much superior prospect to Ryan, but the Mets laughed at them, and the Angels ended up having to "settle" for Ryan. Meaning they had zero clue what they were getting, LOL.
Of course Gentry blew his arm out the next year and Ryan kept pitching through five more presidential administrations.
The reality is that Ryan hated New York and he didn't mesh with Gil Hodges, the Mets' manager, or Rube Walker, their pitching coach, and if he hadn't gotten traded he'd probably have been out of baseball in a few years. The trade to the Angels hooked him up with their pitching coach, Tom Morgan, who Ryan has called the single most important person in his career (he attended Morgan's funeral), because he gave Nolan the direction he needed to become "Nolan Ryan."

He never was the single best pitcher in the league in a given year … before Frank Tanana blew his arm out and lost his heat, there were a couple of years where he wasn’t the best pitcher for the Angels … so he never won a Cy Young, but that takes nothing away from his greatness.
