How long is the 4-team playoff contract for? Is there one?

I ask because I think it is inevitable that it moves to 6 team with top 2 teams getting a bye(which would be better IMO).

They should have done a 2 year trial basis or something.

Does this start next season or the season after that?

2014 season
so 2015 will be the playoff technically.

They said the reason they went for a long deal was to prevent it from growing to a larger number of teams.

I think 4 was a solid start, but they should've had a clause to allow for a 6-team if it was voted on. But cap it at 6.

Secondary question :
Is there a long layoff between the last regular season game played until the first playoff game played?

Semis are Jan 1st. Rose and Sugar in the first year. Jerryworld gets the title game. I could see spending the holidays in NOLA or Pasadena, but I wouldn't go anywhere else strictly for a semi.

Well if the game is on say the 7th, then I could see myself taking a week off and spending the holidays in NOLA or Pasadena then catching the title game for one night in Dallas.

My bet is it goes 4 years and then to 8.
A lot of fans talke about 6 with byes, this makes very little sense, given they are going to still play the title game in early Jan, so a "bye" means basically nothing and 8 means an extra game and revenue

I think 8 is too much, but thats just me. I think the top 2 should be rewarded with BYEs and the bottom 4/6 should earn the right to play the top 2 on the field.
ETA:
I also understand there isn't money in BYEs. But there is boat loads in MNCs and a BYE makes that easier to obtain.
Also, side question:
With the playoff in place, will the NCAA start recognizing the champion of D1?

and if you add another round where would those games be?
essentially this is the plus-one...
most fans can only really make one trip, so they have to choose between going to the semifinal or hoping for the final

Here is my question. With priority going to conference Champions, what does this do to Notre Dame? If Notre Dame can get into the playoff wihtout the conference champioship, why should the otehr teams have to play an extra game risking injury or loss knocking them out of the playoffs while ND sits at home and watches?

it is a priority, not a requirement. To get in ND will have to be in the top 4. If they are, they deserve to be in. Florida would have been in this year as well.
You are also making another good argument to end CCG's. Which won't happen of course because they are money grabs.
