I don't mean that question to sound crass. Has he set a record for longevity for an HIV positive person? I remember way back when he announced everyone thought he was a goner.

I'm sure everyone here will say money. But who knows? Genetics?

Medication has come a long long way since the 80's when people were dropping dead from developing AIDS and dying. I know a couple people who are HIV+ and they are fine for the most part. They spend a lot of money on medication, but no more than older people with desease and serious medical issues.

Retrovirals are incredible these days. If caught early, you can live well into your 60's with HIV. It's when it spreads into the brain where most people are knocking on death's door.

Exactly, the life expectancy is now nearing 70 for people with HIV in the US, and African life expectancies are getting back to the 1990s pre HIV epidemic level.
Turns out HIV was a lot easier to handle than cancer.

Wow. I had no idea. That is a big improvement.

Isn't the life expectancy for male American blacks in the late 60s anyway? If treated early, there may not be that big a difference with proper care.

Because he is a professional basketball player. These are the advantages 99% of people don't get:
Extremely early detection
Peak physical condition
$$$$$ to hire the best docs and health experts in the world to work around the clock for you
