How incredible is it that Gonzaga is a powerhouse?

Let’s forget for a second that they have been great for a couple of decades. We are used to it now. In reality, they struck gold in ‘99 and it carried over when Mark Few took the job. There is absolutely zero reason that a tiny Jesuit school in Spokane should be one of the best programs of the current era, and a favorite for this year’s title.

What Butler did was special.

What Villanova has done is special.

But both of them are in major metro areas compared to Spokane, and it’s not like the Eastern Washington area is known for producing studs.

In modern sports, their consistency might be the most impressive thing in the US.

Another mark on Larry Scott's abysmal legacy

Nova's been a pretty established program since the 70s

Are they?

They beat up on a conference that plays in high school gyms. Have they ever even made a final four?

A lot of what they built was due to their international players, they did a great job pulling talent from abroad.

They’ve been to one final four, I wouldn’t call them a powerhouse either.

eh. Gonzaga was already an established player before him and its not like Gonzaga is really stepping on any of the toes of the Pac 12. That program is all Few

Larry scotts legacy will be tied to the network and conference expansion failures

This is a big reason why Pac-12 basketball has shriveled like a raisin.

You’ll get downvoted, but you’re not entirely wrong. It doesn’t make what they’ve done less spectacular. As mentioned, they’ve done well with international recruits.

Compare them to Washington. The Huskies still dominate in the Seattle area and have produced plenty of NBA talent, just recently Dejounte, Chriss, and Fultz. You can also go back to Romar’s good teams with Brandon Roy, Conroy, and Nate Robinson.

They never clashed with Gonzaga for players. It’s been an interesting separation.

I'm not saying they're good because they take the players who would've gone to the Pac-12 teams, though that did happen with Kispert, I'm saying they are the unquestioned West Coast alpha because Larry's incompetence sank Pac-12 basketball. Oregon's the only program unscathed but they've got that Nike money doing the bag drops for them.

Id argue that UCLA and UA have themselves to blame for their mediocre programs right now and that, save for the late 2000s and early 2010s, USC has never been more consistently ok in basketball. But the rest of the conference has been impacted by the flop of the network

It is remarkable. I can’t think of any comparison for Few staying there this long.

A pretty good comparison of Few/Gonzaga would be Tark/UNLV. Recruit the best players, beat up on lesser competition in your conference.

First thing that comes to mind is what Bill Snyder did at KSU.

UNLV was dirty as hell and you could recruit to Las Vegas
