BYU is about to be in the Big 12 and independent teams have been one of the most common opponents in the Indy Bowl.

Since ESPN's completely made up term of G5 came into existence the Independence Bowl has had exactly one 6-6 G5. That would be Tulsa who lost to 6-6 Virginia Tech 55-52 in 2015. So the "bad" matchup that shouldn't happen created an exciting game.
