John Wooden was a saint! He would never stoop to having a middle man pay for players out of NYC like Lew Alcindor!

don't underestimate the role ESPN

Being in Bristol, they were basically a recruiting tool for both....especially the women.... I remember them talking about UConn's women's basketball incessantly when Lobo gave Geno his first title...and then the coverage by ESPN went to the stratosphere... So much that even Calhoun had irked envy.

Well they are in the Big East. Traditionally, The Big East was the premier conference of college basketball in the 80s. Georgetown, Syracuse, Providence, Villanova, and St Johns all made the final four in the 80s or won it. Iron sharpens iron. Much like the SECs domination in football

Uconn has also been an extremely lucky team.

I’d say that like the SEC in football they also played in an extremely difficult conference. Steel sharpens steel.

IIRC, the Kevin ollie team that won was in the AAC at the time, and lost the AAC tournament final game by like 30 points to Louisville.

That team was by far the worst championship team I've ever seen, in any sport, in my lifetime.

The kemba team might be the second worst NCAA tournament winner I've seen. They participated in the worst final 4 of all time, and one of the worst title games of all time.

Yep. 2014

My MSU choked vs them and UF (that won 30 games) proceeded to play like shite. Shabazz Napier played his off..

UCONN didn't build it with NYC guys. You gotta go all the way to the 2000s to Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva and later Kemba and Drummond for when they finally had some NYC stars. By then the NYC Big East schools had fallen way off.

They recruited nationally and if there was any hotbed it was New England boarding schools

The Kemba team was awesome. The Big East that year was the strongest conference in the history of college basketball

UConn was .500 in conference that year. Big east was great, as it was every year.

That UConn team was definitely better than the Kevin Ollie title team, but they were a one man show that got hot at the end of the year and had a favorable route in the tournament; San Diego State was the highest seeded team they played.

Maybe they were better than the Duke team that beat butler... But who else?

He's Jim fricking Calhoun, bro! Also, UConn playing in the Big East at the height of the Big East in the 80s and ESPN and the Big East Network broadcasting their games due to Gavitt's great business savvy help his recruiting IMMENSELY.

the Big East that year was not the normal strong Big East. 11/16 teams made the tourney that's the best basketball conference ever.

Also I'm taking the Kemba team over 03 Syracuse, 22 Kansas and 17 UNC as well as the teams you already mentioned

All the big east teams kept their coaches for long periods of time. Today, one bad year and you’re looking for the next coach. Back then, they kept them through bad years. Helps recruiting.

UConn beat Florida twice that year. UF had 3 losses total, and UConn was 2 of them. Thwt Shabazz team also beat the #1, #2, and #3 team in their regional.

Without even looking this up I'll tell you that they didn't, as it's not possible.

That’s wrong. MSU beat UVA, who was the East 1 seed in ‘14. UConn then beat MSU in the Elite 8.

My bad, they beat the #2, #3, and #4 in their region and then beat the #1 in the South (Florida) in the F4.

They beat a #1, #2, #3, and #4 in that tournament.

If you’re a 6, 11, or 14 it definitely is

7, 10, and 15 can also do it but not in that order
