I love it when white people feel the need to tell black people what their life experiences are and how to handle them.

Thanks for informing all of us poor, ignorant negroes on our lives, how to live them, and how to handle adversity--that is in the event that you inform us of whether we are facing any.

Thank you, Wise White Massa.

I'd bet my life savings that Aaron couldn't name 3 things he likes about Obama's policy. If Obama was hispanic, would he have brought him up?

And you know this how?

By the way, I agree with your other comments regarding how well Aaron and Mays would play in today's game.

What life experience do you have where a white person held you back due to racism? Maybe I'm ignorant to the issue.

I've been robbed and targeted by blacks for being white. I was not hired for a part time job in college for being white because they needed "diversity".

Aaron certainly had some bad life experiences, but it's a shame he's letting that bitterness turn him into the racist he claims to hate.

It's just a guess based on the fact he's never been politically involved before Obama was president. I get the sense that a lot of people just like him for the color of his skin and not the content of his policies.

Yeah, we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

I think you are undervaluing HOF's Willie Mays and Hank Aaron's careers. If they were playing in this day and age, with the technology, facilities, metrics, workout regimes, competition, etc., I think they would be just as good, if not better than their original careers.

Why? The competition is better. Maybe it levels out? I don't know and neither does anyone else. It's just my opinion they would be slightly worse today. I mean, why are the top hitters from the 2000s-2010s not hitting .340 and .388 every single year like the days from Mays, Aaron, Mantle, Gehrig, Williams, etc. Hell, a .319 average puts you in the running today for a batting crown today. Not back then. Is it because players today are worse?

2000-now batting title winning averages(al/nl)
2013 .348/.331
2012 .330/.336
2011 .344/.337
2010 .359/.336
2009 .365/.342
2008 .328/.364
2007 .363/.340
2006 .347/.344
2005 .331/.335
2004 .372/.362
2003 .326/.359
2002 .349/.370
2001 .350/.350
2000 .372/.372

You are confusing some eras here. Mantle was like 8 years old when Lou Gehrig retired--they did not play in the same era.

Now this is MLB total average, so naturally it increased when the DH rule came into effect in 1973.

We are back to the levels of parts of the 60s and below levels of parts of the 50s for BA.

But you can see that a guy like Hank Aaron played in multiple eras of offense, really

And these very high averages for guys really come from before 1940, not the Mays/Mantle/Aaron type years:

highest average since Ted Williams' .406 in 1941 (he had 606 PAs)?
1994 Tony Gwynn .393 (475 pa)
1980 George Brett .390 (515 pa)
1957 Ted Williams .388 (547 pa)
1977 Rod Carew .388 (
1999 Larry Walker .379

Of the top 100 batting average seasons in MLB history
2 are from the '90s (Tony Gwynn in strike shorteened 1994, .393 AVG and Larry Walker at Coors field .379 in 1999)
1 is from the 80s (George Brett .390 in 1980, he played in 117g)
1 is from the 70s (Rod Carew .388 1977)
0 from the 60s
1 from the 50s, Ted Williams .388 in 1957
1 from the 40s, Ted Williams' .406 in 1941
94 from before 1940!

This is true, as there are still racists today and there always will be. However, I don't believe blacks face any more racism today than do whites, hispanics, or asians.

While flat out racism is barely visible in today's society, racial bias, discrimination & sterotypes are sub categories of racism & are much easier to hide. You don't see it or refuse to see it because in your mind, race relations between blacks & whites are perfect. You see any black that brings up race as a racist or race baiter. Until you remove that mental roadblock from the your way of thinking, you will never be open to a real discussion which turns conversations like this one into a waste of time.

Aww, so I guess all blacks must pay for the sins of a few, right? Just because some blacks decided to rob you, you feel like you need to discredit any black who mentions race? How is your stance any different from Aaron's. Maybe you need to learn to let go just as you mentioned Hank should do.

I think being told he would be shot down at the plate, receiving tons of hate mail & having to be watched over by the FBI is more then just a few bad life experiences.

Agree 100%. However, lots of people only think whites show bias and discrimination. My argument is that everyone equally experiences discrimination today.

What? I never claimed such an absurd thing. It's the distrust by both sides and the people being bitter due to past indiscretions that is fueling racial tension today.

You see any black that brings up race as a racist or race baiter

Because many people, not all, who bring it up are looking to accuse someone or is race baiting.

No. I brought that up to show that I've been discriminated against for being white. I brought that up because the earlier poster was on a rant about how I (a white devil) could never understand what it's like to be discriminated against.

Some random responses to this whole thread...

Wrists are joints, not muscles. The muscle that causes a strong wrist snap is the forearm and Aaron always said he had very strong forearms.

Re: Mays being small. He wasn't tall but he was more muscular than Aaron. Bigger chest, shoulders, biceps.

Re: Mantle not being big. He was extremely muscular although he never lifted weights.

Aaron did have the advantage of Fulton County Stadium's short fences when he got older. The dimensions of the stadium were purposely made to accommodate him when the club moved from Milwaukee.

I would imagine whoever swings the bat the fastest will send the ball the furthest.

I am only 6' 160 lbs. but I am whole lot stronger than friends that are 40-90 lbs heavier than me.

Well HA himself attributed his power hitting to his wrist strength which was developed as a young man hauling ice...not to interrupt the social/racial discussion by addressing the original question or anything

It's similar with pitchers. I batted against Ron Guidry in HS. He was about 5-9, 150. He went on a weight lifting schedule at USL and went to the MLB about 170. He was always much smaller than the back of his baseball card listed. But he consistently through in the 90s with sinking action.
