I think it depends on the situation. If I was a highly draft eligible player on Cincinnati’s football team, I may skip knowing that Alabama is going to beat the living dog shite out of us in the first game.
WTF
We can’t simultaneously say “Alabama was flawed” and also say “Alabama will walk through the CFP, don’t even bother showing up”

if you are a star QB at Ohio State, there’s no reason to play against non-conf schools like Kent State and the like.
No coach worth the name is going to let his players dictate to him which games they will play in and which they won't. They can get away with quitting before bowl games because the coach has no recourse at that point. But quitting on in-season games? That only happens if they are fine with sitting out the rest of the year (like Stingley).

That'd be a horrible business move. Performing in the CFB playoff against elite competition does far more to help draft stock than playing in some crap bowl in Dumpwater, TX

You assume the coach will always have job security. These coaches need the star players. These players ink the NIL deal worth a few million, have their family as “representation”, then start calling the shots. Again, look at pro sports. The star players in the NFL and NBA are more valuable than the coach. It could happen to some college teams too.

Probably closer than ever before. I fully expect it to happen next year.
