Horse betting advice?

Going to the track tonight. Should I just get wasted and wing it, or is it worth it to buy a tip sheet?
Any advice is welcome. I've never done this, and I'm afraid I'm about to find my latest addiction.

Which track you headed to?

I go rarely and buy the daily racing guide and make my picks based on arbitrary criteria. If there's two horses I like, I'll box an exacta and often win around 40 bucks off 4 doing that.
Obviously I'm not making money consistently this way, just a fun and easy way for an amateur.

Lone Star Park. Somehow got into a box. Somebody knows a trainer. So I'm going to have to be quiet when I'm betting against her horses.

Unfortunately it is my latest addiction.
I would definitely buy a tip sheet if you don't know anything about the horses.
What's your bankroll for the evening?

Not much at all. I spent all of my real fun money last weekend at a bachelor party. I shouldn't be doing this at all. Maybe 100...

if ur going for shits and grins, buy a tip sheet. or buy a program and read the running lines and pick ur horse.
Also, want to talk about getting screwd: Hit an exacta at los alamitos thoroghbred meet Thursday. MY horse was 7/1 horse who ran 2nd was 80/1. Large field, 4/5 favorite. I had a $2 exacta, and thought i broke the bank, nope, exacta paid $320 for 2bucks. Total screwjob, that should pay at the least 700, if not 1000.

I would spend most of it on win bets if I were you. Maybe $20 or so on exotics.
I went to the tracks in May and have been doing a little bit a week ever since online. I gave myself a $200 bankroll this week and got it up to $2600 by yesterday but I blew every single dollar of it last night on some huge win bets.
Good luck.

Did you ever get an explanation on why it paid so low?

Lone Star is nag racing. Just get a program and look at the past performances. If you see any horses that have run for any real money at real tracks, bet them. Real tracks= Keeneland, Churchill, Belmont, Saratoga, Santa Anita, Del Mar, Oaklawn, Fairgrounds, Gulfstream. Bet the class.

Exotics playoffs don't have anything to do with a horse's win odds. They're usually correlated but they're just a percentage of the total exacta, trifecta, superfecta etc pool. A lot of people must have had that 80/1 horse coming in second on an exotic bet trying to win some money.

Put it all on Blue Note to win in the 4th race at Narragansett

The program will have a list of leading jockeys. If you're a novice, sticking with a horse ridden by one of the top two or three riders isn't a bad way to go. It's not unusual for a hot jockey to win three or four races on a given day.

A horse's connections will sometimes try to hide a big bet in the exotics because it's not as noticeable as a big win bet. If you're observant, you can look for disparities in a horse's win odds and what it will pay in the exactas. For instance, if a horse's win odds are 8-1, and its exacta probables look more like what you'd expect of a favorite, something is up.

Just pick out the horse with a name that stands out to you and put $10 across on it(win, place, show).

A bettor who knows his shite will do better than this over the long run, but on any given day the hunch player can make a serious handicapper look silly

So I'm home, and I broke even. Only person in the whole suite. I was up like 25 and decided to throw it around on the last race. Dumb. But at that point I was pretty glad to know I'd be leaving with all of my money, and was hoping to get lucky.
And this suite was on the fricking finish line. Unreal.

If the average Joe thinks he can make OT $$ betting on the ponies, he is delusional. Its a rigged game.
But every now then, someone will get beginners luck and walk away with a few bucks
