What you young guys fail to understand is Baseball is all about stats, stats matter. Ruth, Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Gibson, their records matter, they did it without roids. Look what the HR totals, RBI and other stats are now, as opposed to the roid years ! Do you think it's fair to Aaron, Mays or Mantle ? I don't. We can agree to disagree here. Good night !
What are your thoughts on integration in baseball? Do you think the stats before integration are equal to the stats after integration?
Every athlete in every era has had some kind of benefit over athletes in other eras.
If you took Ruth's personality and placed it in modern day baseball, he would more than likely be hated by baseball fans. He wasn't the guy you read about in biographies as a child.

How is it athletic performance improves in every sport except baseball? Modern athletes run faster, jump higher and farther and swim faster than their predecessors? Why would you not expect modern baseball players to throw harder and hit the ball farther? If the modern pitchers do in fact throw harder than those of prior eras, then wouldn't it make sense that hitting the pitches would be more difficult, but that hit pitches would travel farther? Common sense would cause one to think so. And Bonds has been the best hitter of the modern era, in which the pitching has been more difficult to hit.
That is a reasonable argument for Bonds being the best hittter in the history of the game.

I've actually used steroids, They definitely can get u swole fast if u bust ur arse and eat right. But they do not give u talent. Barry was great before steroid use. Honestly alot of muscle is not efficient, wat bonds got in power it prolly hindered other parts of his game. But great points by alot of peeps in this thread, so I kno this guy is just trolling

Considering once everything leveled out black people are only about 10% of the player pool and they mostly don't pitch I don't think the stats are as different as people assume they would be. Hispanics make a bigger difference.

that would be like saying its harder for a QB today because the DBs are faster, its not correct

I think the integration knock on Ruth era players isn't just that they didn't play black competition, it's that they only played white Americans that were discovered via extremly limited scouting/searching and from a generation that didn't grow up with the notion that baseball was a good source of income. Modern era players face the top competition in THE WORLD and every corner of the earth is mined for top talent. They are drawn in from everywhere to play for top dollar. The increase in the talent pool is exponential and far beyond the inclusion of the black American. Hell, there are even plenty of white Americans playing today that never would have been discovered or cultivated on Ruths era.

I think that they were just implying that baseball was white Americans only. There were no blacks, Hispanics, Japanese, etc.

You know, I actually do not think he will get in the first try. For some reason, only a select few get on the first try. Bonds clearly has the accolades as a first balloter, but steroids result in the sportswriters waiting a year before they let him. I personally do not get why they do it, but they do.

Blacks were banned, but not hispanics or indians. As far as asians they were just being introduced to the sport.

I hope he gets in the Hall of Fame.
Agreed. It's a shame he probably won't because of all the steroid stuff. PEDs or not, he was still one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Remember him back in the Pittsburgh days when he was young, thin, and fast? Man he could play!

I'm basing it mostly on what I've heard sportswriters say. The same sportswriters who talk about it hurting McGwire, don't seem to have it affect their view of Bonds as a HoFer because they can still justify it based on the first 12-13 years of his career anyway. Though people don't talk about it as much anyway, so maybe viewpoints have changed. I don't know.

If only the DB's are faster, then that would be true. But aren't the receivers also faster? And then there are the rule changes so that the comparisons are moe difficult to make. Baseball has had fewer rules changes than football, but lowering the pithcer's mound and adding the designated hitter definitely have had some impact on the hitting and pitching statistics.

add in smaller ball parks & strike zone, there was a reason it was called the dead ball era
